Шотландия запретила выращивание ГМО на своей территории
Согласно разрешению властей Евросоюза, отдельные страны имеют право ввести запрет на выращивание на своих землях генетически модифицированных культур. В августе правительство Шотландии воспользовалось этим правом и полностью запретило выращивание ГМО на территории государства.
Власти заявили, что не допустят, чтобы сельское хозяйство пострадало от «загрязнения» чужеродными культурами. Жесточайший запрет исключит, по мнению властей, любые возможные ухудшения качества продукции. Представитель Правительства заявила, что разрешение ГМ-культур в Шотландии навредит репутации экологически чистого и зеленого бренда и сектору напитков и еды, приносящему 14 млрд фунтов стерлингов.
Директор общеевропейской биотехнологической ассоциации Бит Шпет выразил сожаление в связи с решением Шотландии. По его мнению, власти страны запретили культивирование безопасных культур. Шотландские фермеры, считает Шпет, потеряли право на свободный выбор.
