same creative team go wrong? Just three weeks ago, tracking services pegged the movie for a $70 million debut, which would still have been down a fair amount
from Joker’s record-breaking $96.2 million launch in October 2019.

Joker: Folie à Deux cost at least twice as much as the first film to produce, though reported figures vary at
exactly how pricey it was to make. Phillips told Variety that
it was less than the reported $200 million; Others have it pegged
at $190 million. Warner Bros. released the film in 4,102 locations in North America.
About 12.5 percent of its domestic total came from 415 IMAX screens.
Internationally, it’s earned $81.1 million from 25,788 screens,
bringing its total global earnings estimate to $121.1 million. In the
next two weeks, Joker 2 will also open in Japan and China.
Second place went to Universal and DreamWorks Animation’s
The Wild Robot, which added $18.7 million in its second weekend, bringing its
domestic total to nearly $64 million. Globally, it’s made over $100 million. Warner Bros.’ Beetlejuice
Beetlejuice took third place in weekend five, Paramount’s
Transformers One landed in fourth and Universal and Blumhouse’s Speak No Evil
rounded out the top five.
The other big new release of the weekend, Lionsgate’s White
Bird, flopped with just $1.5 million from just over
1,000 locations, despite an A+ CinemaScore.
Overall, the weekend is up from the same frame last year, but Joker’s start
is an unwelcome twist for theater owners hoping to narrow
the box office deficit.

Providing, of course, that the bill was on someone else.
Because caviar, smeared on blinis or piled high on baked potatoes, sure
didn’t come cheap. There may have been other things on the menu,
but no one paid them much heed. This was all about lashings
of the black stuff.
Caviar Kaspia’s signature baked potato and caviar: ‘there are few better dishes on earth…only the price, at
just under £150, is ridiculous’
Caviar Kaspia popped her final tin about two decades back.
And that site, hidden down a smart Mayfair mews, was taken over
by Gavin Rankin (who used to be the boss), and transformed into the brilliant Bellamy’s.
It prospers to this day. Kaspia, on the other hand,
went quiet. Until last year, when she reopened as a members’ club in another Mayfair backstreet.
But a £2,000 a year membership fee proved hard to swallow,
meaning the doors were opened to the great unwashed.
Which is how we find ourselves sitting in a rather handsome – albeit near empty – dining
room, lusciously lavish, under the stern gaze of a stern painting
of a very stern man. The soft, crepuscular gloom is broken up
by the glare of table lamps, indecorously bright, while a loud soundtrack of indolent, indeterminate beats throbs in the background.
The whole place is scented with gilded ennui.
Our fellow diners are two young South Korean women of pale, luminescent beauty, clad in diaphanous
couture. They don’t speak, rather communicate entirely via camera phone.
Pose, click, check, filter, post. Immaculate waiters hover
in the shadows.
We sip ice-cold vodka, and eat a £77 caviar and smoked-salmon Kaspia croque monsieur that tastes far
better than it ought to. Next door, a large table fills with
a glut of the noisily, glossily confident.
We’re looked after by a wonderful French lady of such effervescent charm and charisma that had she
burst into an impromptu performance of ‘Willkommen’, we would have barely blinked.
Baked potatoes, skin as crisp as parchment, insides whipped savagely hard with butter and sour cream, are a study in tuber art.
A cool jet-black splodge of oscietra caviar, gently saline,
raises them to the sublime. Only the price, at just under £150 each, is ridiculous.
But there are few better dishes on earth. I’d
eat this every day if I could. But I can’t. Obviously. That’s the problem with caviar.
One taste is never enough.

Following on from 2019’s psychological thriller from director Todd Phillips, Joaquin Phoenix reprises his role
as clown Arthur Fleck who has descended into mental illness.
Folie à Deux begins with Arthur behind bars in Arkham Asylum, waiting to see whether he will be judged sane enough
to stand trial for the murders he committed two years prior.
In the meantime he is enjoying his celebrity status with
fellow prisoners and even the warders, one of whom, a sadistic Irishman played
by Brendan Gleeson, feeds him cigarettes in return for jokes.

Lady Gaga plays Harleen ‘Lee’ Quinzel, a fellow inmate on her way, fans believe,
to becoming Joker’s girlfriend Harley Quinn.
The pair hit it off at a music therapy class, and are soon mutually smitten, but Lee makes it clear that she loves the dangerously charismatic Joker, ‘clown prince of crime’, not the
gloomily introspective Arthur.
Eventually, after Arthur’s high-profile TV appearance with
a smug interviewer played by Steve Coogan, it is time for the trial, with all of Gotham gripped by
the subject of multiple personality disorder.
His lawyer (Catherine Keener) strives to show that Joke
is accused of five murders, rather than Arthur. Lee just as
urgently wants him to identify as his demonic alter ego.
In the final scenes, Arthur renounces his Joker alter-ego and is found guilty of first-degree
murder.
As he is being sentenced a car bomb detonates outside the court, with two
people helping Arthur escape, but he is later caught by the police
and taken back to Arkham.
In the Asylum a young patient begins to tell Arthur a joke, before stabbing
him in the stomach and while he bleeds to death, carves a smile into
his own face.
It raises questions surrounding the Joker’s true identity, as
it would seem he never went on to become the famed villain, instead he was just the person who inspired the
man who eventually became him.

Director Todd, told Entertainment Weekly: ‘When those guards kill that kid
in the [hospital] he realises that dressing up in makeup, putting on this thing, it’s not changing anything.
‘In some ways, he’s accepted the fact that he’s always been Arthur Fleck; he’s never
been this thing that’s been put upon him, this idea that Gotham people put on him, that he
represents.
‘He’s an unwitting icon. This thing was placed on him, and he doesn’t want to live as a fake anymore — he wants to be who he is.’
The movie serves as a follow-up to Phoenix’s 2019 box office hit,
which was simply titled Joker.
The Todd Phillips-directed musical was released
in theatres on October 4, following an October
2 international release.

to exit the Russian market, citing a complex and rapidly changing regulatory and operating

Lady Gaga is set to release her seventh studio album in February.
Despite lead single Disease stalling on the Hot 100 at No.
27, the 38-year-old is forging ahead with her next album, which she described as both ‘fun’ and ‘darker.’
Speaking to Vogue magazine about the project, Gaga said
that she’s been focused on the production side of her new songs.
‘I love producing — I always have — and something that was
really important to me making my seventh studio album was
blending live instrumentation with programming,’ she explained.
‘The album is chaotic from a genre perspective — it is genre-bending, and I think
in that way is a deeply personal look into my mind as a producer and the way
I think about music.’
She also said that the album has a ‘darker pop’ sound that’s more in line
with her iconic 2009 album, The Fame Monster.
However, fans need not be worried that Gaga is going
too somber with her sound.
‘The album is not extremely serious in that it’s very
fun and meant to be enjoyed at a party, in a club, or at home
having personal fun time — to be free of your worries at home or
walking through life,’ she insisted.
Lady Gaga is focused on releasing her seventh studio album
this February following the disappointing reception to lead single
Disease
Gaga released the album’s lead single Disease last month to
rave reviews from music critics, who lauded it as a
return to the star’s roots.
Unfortunately, the acclaim failed to translate to the charts, with Disease debuting at
No. 27 on the Hot 100 – her worst entry for a lead single in 16 years.
On the bright side, Gaga is currently enjoying one of
her biggest hits in years thanks to her Bruno Mars duet, Die With a
Smile.
The ballad has so far reached No. 2 on the Hot 100 and No.
1 on the Pop Airplay Chart.
It comes after Gaga’s leading role in the disastrous Joker:
Folie à Deux.
The follow-up to the Oscar-winning 2019 film, starring Joaquin Phoenix as Arthur Fleck
(Joker) and Gaga as Lee Quinzel (Harley Quinn), faced negative reviews from critics before its October
4 release and flopped at the box office.

movie, said Todd Philips’s new film has ‘no plot’ and admitted he knew it was ‘going to bomb’ while filming.

The cost for one of London’s most pricey apartments will

Pricing details of billionaire John Caudwell’s spectacular 1
Mayfair development have now been revealed and only those with the
deepest pockets can hope to afford one of the lavish pads.
The cheapest apartment on offer is expected to
be an eye-watering £35million – around 70 times the average cost of a house in the capital.
Due to complete in Spring 2026 the scheme will easily
surpass London’s previous record breaker,
the £1.3billion One Hyde Park development in Knightsbridge.
Caudwell told The Standard that there are already more
than 600 prospective buyers on a waiting list of billionaires and centi-millionaires who have expressed an interest in making a purchase at the scheme.
There will be just 24 ‘principal residences’ in the property
including lateral apartments, penthouses and townhouses with up to five bedrooms, and five more smaller
‘pieds-à-terre’ apartments.
The size of the homes has not yet been disclosed but the developers say even the most modest property will start with a guide price
exceeded by only a handful of mansions in London’s richest neighbourhoods.
The average price of all 29 units – which cover
300,000 sq ft – will be close to £70million.

The entry level price of £35million is 70 times the average London property value
of around £500,000, and 130 times the national average price of £268,000
revealed in today’s Nationwide house price survey for
November.
The development’s basement is being dug down to 90ft below ground level to make room for a
health spa with a 20 metre swimming pool as well as a car park.
The designs were led by New York based architect Robert Stern and practice RAMSA, with contractors, Mace, the construction managers and PJ Carey responsible
for the creation of the basement substructure and superstructure.
Due to complete in Spring 2026 after a six years build the scheme will easily surpass London’s previous record
breaker, the £1.3billion One Hyde Park development in Knightsbridge.

4u – attended the topping out of 1 Mayfair alongside senior members of the construction team.
The ceremony was marked by the final steel rafter, one of 79 at
roof level, being put into place on the top of the nine-storey main apartment building.
No expense has been spared on the building’s interior and it will feature a
ceiling with hand-painted frescos based on Michelangelo’s Map of
the Heavens in the Vatican, a reception room with a double height ceiling
and 18ft high French windows overlooking the garden.
There will also be a Palace of Versailles Hall of Mirrors-style crystal callery, created from over 1,264 hand-set pieces of cut
glass, a library and a garden gallery, with seating areas opening directly
onto the central courtyard garden.

July 23 (Reuters) – Philip Morris International pushed the test-launch of its
heated tobacco device, IQOS, in the U.S. to the fourth quarter on Tuesday and lowered its
annual forecast for the heated tobacco business.
The pilot was earlier scheduled to run in Austin, Texas, in the second
quarter, for which the company reported results on the day.
The company declined to comment on why the launch had been delayed.
Philip Morris has invested billions to promote and expand its
portfolio of alternatives to traditional combustible
cigarettes amid stricter regulations and falling
smoking rates in some markets.
The launch of its flagship heated tobacco device in the
United States is also facing resistance from health campaigners, who have written to regulators in the country
accusing the company of misrepresenting past regulatory decisions, Reuters
reported last week.
The company also awaits market authorization from the U.S.
Food and Drug Administration for its IQOS ILUMA device, which it
expects by the second half of 2025.
A ban on flavored heated tobacco in the European Union has already hit shipments this year, with Philip
Morris saying the impact from the ban was “slightly greater” than previously assumed.
This led the company to temper its expectations for volume growth in the heated tobacco
category to around 13% for the full year,
down from between 14% and 16% expected earlier.
However, Philip Morris topped quarterly expectations and raised its

Federal MPs flew with the national carrier for 80 per cent of work trips last year despite
it not always being the cheapest route, according to travel data
provided to the government.
While politicians and their staffers are required to book the cheapest flight,
it also has to be the most efficient, with Qantas offering the most routes between major cities.
MPs are banned from accruing frequent flyer points on taxpayer-funded trips
like ordinary Aussies can, but they can can receive lifetime status credits, which allows access to
airport lounges and flight upgrades.
‘How else can one explain the extraordinary dominance of Qantas in securing bookings by
parliamentarians and their staff?’ Myriam
Robin wrote in an opinion piece for the Australian Financial
Review.
‘There’s nothing like accruing status credits on someone else’s dime.’
Transport Minister Catherine King has since committed to a review of
flight bookings by government officials which will be conducted by the Department of Finance this
year, despite there being just two months left of 2024.

Throw the rulebook out the window and experiment
Ruby Hammer MBE, 62, is one of the best-known and respected make-up artists in the industry.
She has worked with Kate Moss and Cindy Crawford and created her own brand, Ruby Hammer.
Ruby says: I look at ageing as a boon and we have to
be open to adapting. There’s no point wishing for your 20s and 30s to come back.
You must make a conscious decision to re-evaluate your skincare and your make-up.
Don’t just reach out for products. Think about what’s going to work for you.
With older skin you need to build up thin layers, and you don’t want a heavy and
thick product. Try No7 Restore & Renew Serum Foundation, SPF30
(£18.66, boots.com). One area might need a bit more coverage,
so add more. Look at skin tints or moisturisers or foundations
with serum. These are light and don’t sink into wrinkles.

Any woman over 50 needs a decent concealer. It’s a multipurpose product; skin might be
a little crepey around the eyes, you might have a breakout
or you might be a bit more ruddy around the nose.
A top tip is to use two shades for different areas of the face — I use a

The texture is slightly thicker, which scares people, but actually if
you’ve prepped your skin well, it dabs on and doesn’t wear off.
For youthful glow and long-lasting vibrancy, I recommend

Everything loses its bloom with age, and the complexion can appear a bit
dull and grey. I would suggest the red, whatever your skin colour.
You just need a tiny bit — dab onto the apple of your cheek and blend with your fingers.
Build up if you need to — if you’re darker skinned, add more; if you’re
fair, just use a smidgen.

Don’t be scared of red but don’t be heavy-handed.
There are so many lovely lipstick products.
Go for a hybrid one that gives comfort for dryer
lips and has a hint of colour. Clarins Lip Oil (£25, clarins.co.uk) has both qualities.
You don’t need a mirror to apply it, just whip it out for
a top-up.
Eyes can look less bright but a really good mascara will open them up so you look wider awake.
My Mascara & Brow Duo (£28, rubyhammer.com) has a tubular
formula, which means it wraps around lashes, stops smudges and comes off with hot water.
One end tidies the brows and the other is a mascara. Use one layer for daily running around and then build up to a couple in the evening.
Either use a primer at the beginning or a setting spray at the end of your make-up.
Try Nanoset from Indeed Labs (£24.99, indeedlabs.com) which you just
spray onto the face. It’s long-lasting, has blurring properties,
and gives older faces a bit of a soft-focus look.
Don’t…feel there are any rules. Enjoy experimenting with looks.

Brows lose definition and hairs so can look sparse.
Try Graphite Brow pencil by 19/99 (£22, spacenk.co/uk).
It’s an age-inclusive company, and this gives a soft, natural look.
Use the brush to tidy brows and then fill in with the pencil at the other end.
Don’t… overdo it. Avoid heavy contouring and keep coverage light and fresh.
Don’t hide and try to conceal wrinkles

In the ’70s she was part of the Studio 54 crowd and now her
YouTube make-up teach-ins for older women are legendary.
Sandy says: You need to like what you see in the mirror, whether you age
naturally or not. But don’t hide yourself. There aren’t any make-up rules
for older women, but don’t try to conceal wrinkles, because
you’ll just draw attention to them.
Kevyn Aucoin Glass Glow Face (£30, sephora.co.uk) is fabulous.
You have to use it discreetly — a little on cheekbones, a little on lips and a little on the eyelids — but it gives your face
a lovely glow which is what fades as we age. The main thing I’ve
noticed is that your eyelashes get messy, thin and dry.
Everyone uses plumpers, but I’ve never had any success.

The only mascara I recommend is Chanel Volume Mascara (£27.90, boots.com).
It will never disappoint you. And always use black to frame the eyes, which lose definition. It’s a myth that older women can’t use black.
I love NARS Air Matte Blush (£24.30, lookfantastic.com).
I scoop a little out with my finger, rub it on the
back of my hand to melt it down and apply from my hand to my cheek.
It’s smooth on midlife skin and gives a gentle
glow.
And actually, the best liquid eyeliner is by NARS as well — the Climax Liquid Eyeliner (£20.82, boots.com) has
the best feathered tip point I’ve ever used. You cannot
make a mistake using this as a liquid liner. Apply from the inner corner
of the eye to the outside.
I always hold my fingers on the end of the eye and pull slightly so that the skin is firm.
And I use a Q Tip to create a little flick upwards at
the end.
Finally, we can’t leave out MAC. All make-up artists love MAC.
Some products deliver more than others, but I’ve been using the Studio Fix Fluid
Foundation (£34, maccosmetics.co.uk) since it was created.
It’s a standout product. Go a shade or two darker than your natural
skin colour.
Don’t . . . use heavier foundation thinking it will cover up
imperfections. As you get older less and lighter is better.
You cannot cover wrinkles with makeup.
Use blush subtly, to create healthy glow
Make-up artist Florrie White, 50, has worked with Uma Thurman,
Gillian Anderson and Meg Ryan.
Florrie says: I work with some very beautiful older women, and what’s
important is that you aren’t showing off the make-up, you’re showing off the individual and enhancing their
beauty. I’m flattered they ask me to do their
make-up, because by this age you know what you want to look like.
I turned 50 myself this year and I’ve noticed that you do need to tweak your make-up.
I use the same amount, but I’m using far lighter products on my skin —
tinted moisturiser rather than foundation. Shiseido Revitalessence Skin Glow foundation, SPF30 (£49, lookfantastic.com) gives a luminous glow and you can still see your skin, which is what you want.

You can get sensitive eyes as you get older, and I recommend dyeing eyelashes and brows.
There’s a good dye called RefectoCil (£5.95, justmylook.com)
which makes them look thicker and you don’t need mascara.
It’s also smudge and waterproof.
I’ve had a lot of comments about Gillian Anderson’s make-up this awards season, and I’ve been using green around
her eyes, which might seem surprising. I’m a big fan of Victoria Beckham’s Satin Kajal
Liner (£30, victoriabeckhambeauty.com). Smudge these deep
purples, blues or greens into the roots of the lashes then black mascara, and that will add
light around the eyes.
The brand Violette FR does amazing lipsticks that are more like stains and
last a long time without sinking into lip wrinkles.
Apply its sheer matte lipstick called Bisou Balm (£29, violettefr.com) with a lip brush.
Don’t . . . make your blush a ‘feature’ unless you want to look like
a doll or are slightly desperate to hide tiredness.
Think of it as adding a warmth or a healthy glow to your complexion.

Get an outdoor glow, it’s all about hydration
Oscar-nominated Amber Sibley, 55, has worked with Annie Lennox, Thandiwe Newton and
Willem Dafoe.
Amber says: Ideally you’ve adapted your make-up over
the years, but for me working on older skin is about hydration — a well-hydrated
complexion creates a healthy base for make-up.
I always start with a serum called Rainforest Dew by Tropic (£44, tropicskincare.com), which improves
skin hydration as you wear it. Pat all over the face
and neck, decolletage, and especially the hollow at the base of the neck.
Blush-wise, I always use lipstick on the cheek in a plum or blood-coloured shade such as Amaryllis by Dr Hauschka (£20.50, drhauschka.co.uk), so it looks as though you’ve walked through
a forest or field and have got a lovely outdoor glow.

Lipstick stays put and the sheen looks fresh and natural. Dab on the apples
of your cheeks where you’d blush if you were embarrassed.
My main tip for the over 50s is to use concealer in the middle of the crow’s feet at the outside corner of the eye.
Most people have a pinker area there that goes downwards.
Tap some Tropic Illuma Light-Diffusing Concealer (£18, tropicskincare.co.uk) into that
corner.
It gives the illusion of lifting the eye.
Use a shade a tiny bit lighter than your own skin tone. Concealer is more important than foundation — you can also use it at the deepest point on either side of the bridge
of the nose and under the bag beneath the eye.
Mascara is vital for defining the eye. You need to get right to the roots of the eyelash to emphasise them.
Start in the middle and work to the outside, then do just a
few going towards the nose. Green People Volumising
Mascara (£21.50, greenpeople.co.uk), is great for
sensitive eyes. Or Tropic Fixing Gel Mascara (£18, tropicskincare.co.uk),
stays on in the rain but isn’t waterproof so comes off easily.
Use the same principle with eyebrows which get thinner and
paler. Fill in just a little with a creamy pomade to make a big
difference. Ensure the main body of the brow is parallel to the arch

Don’t . . . put concealer over your whole under-eye area like the Tik-Tokers.

set to be released Friday.
Diesase, the first of songs from her forthcoming seventh album, was teased Tuesday
on the Grammy-winning artist’s Instagram account, as she captioned the image: ‘DISEASE 10.25.’
In a teaser clip from the viewpoint of an approaching vehicle, the actress-singer, whose real name is
Stefani Germanotta, sported a black mane as she ran from it.
Gaga’s label Universal Music on Monday put out pre-saves for
the forthcoming single, with links to Spotify and Apple Music, Variety reported.

Venice, a city long associated with masks and masquerades,
was the perfect place to unveil Joker five years ago; and last month, at the venerable film
festival there, it was followed by the sequel, Joker: Folie
À Deux.
The director is again Todd Phillips, with Joaquin Phoenix once
more in the title role, this time joined by Lady Gaga as what I suppose we must call the love interest, although that would undervalue her wonderful performance.
We’ve known since A Star Is Born in 2018 that she can act,
but she really is terrific in a bad-girl role. They’d have loved her at St Trinian’s.
This film is audaciously different in style from the original,
not as electrifying, but bold and brilliant all the same.
Arthur is now behind bars, waiting to see whether he
will be judged sane enough to stand trial for murder, and
in the meantime enjoying his celebrity status with fellow prisoners
and even the warders, one of whom, a sadistic Irishman played
by Brendan Gleeson, feeds him cigarettes in return for jokes.

Which is more real: the psychopath wearing the mask or the vulnerable fellow behind it?
Either way, identity confusion is the theme of this film, which
keeps being billed as a musical.
It’s not, really, although music looms large as an expression of Arthur and Lee’s burgeoning
love for one another. And there are a couple of swooning dance routines that make them
look like psychotic versions of Ryan Gosling and Emma Stone
in La La Land (2016).
Moreover, it is while watching Vincente Minnelli’s 1953 classic The Band Wagon that Lee, who claims to have
been imprisoned for arson, sets fire to their prison wing.
The ensuing chaos provides an excellent opportunity to escape, yet Phillips
and his co-writer Scott Silver skilfully toy with
our expectations throughout; each time we anticipate which way
the narrative is going to go, it confounds us
by wheeling off in another direction.

to show it is the former; Lee just as urgently wants him to identify as his demonic alter ego.

For me, Joker was a near-masterpiece, and while this sequel doesn’t
scale those heady heights, it is still a gripping film about
mental illness; not quite comparable with all-time greats such as Psycho (1960) and One Flew Over The Cuckoo’s Nest (1975), but not too far off.
– Joker’s Gotham, of course, is a lightly fictionalised version of New York City.
The real thing is the backdrop to A Different Man, another absorbing story, splendidly
written and directed by Aaron Schimberg, about an urban loner struggling with life.
In the case of the troubled, self-conscious Edward (Sebastian Stan),
an aspiring actor, that’s apparently because he has a disfiguring craniofacial condition. Instructional corporate videos seem to be about as far as
he can get in the acting world.
There are obvious echoes of The Elephant Man (1980), and for that
matter of recent release The Substance, in which Demi Moore’s
character, a former movie star ‘disfigured’ by a few wrinkles, finds a way of transforming into her own younger self.

Here, Edward is told by a doctor that ‘an alternative path has presented itself’.
In other words, medical science has found a way to reverse his condition, turning him into a perfectly attractive middle-aged man.
But Schimberg’s point, made with great satirical swagger, is that Edward, despite his radical
change in appearance, is still the same person underneath that he always was.
In his former condition he was befriended by his pretty, charismatic neighbour,
Ingrid (Renate Reinsve), a playwright. Now he
is able to fall into bed with her, and to star in a play she has written about their relationship,
little though she knows of his real identity.
I was even reminded of Tootsie (1982) and Mrs Doubtfire (1993) as Edward’s new persona
fundamentally fails to alter who he actually is. This
is illuminated by the arrival of Oswald, an Englishman with
the same condition Edward once had, but popular, witty, confident,
and gloriously played by Adam Pearson (who really does suffer from
a disfiguring condition called neurofibromatosis).
Pearson is probably best-known for his debut film, Jonathan Glazer’s brilliant Under The
Skin (2013). Which is apt, because this picture, too, is about what’s under the skin.

The 68th London Film Festival opens next week with the world
premiere of Blitz, director Steve McQueen’s drama set in London as the Luftwaffe’s bombs rain down night after night.
Saoirse Ronan, for my money one of the most talented actresses of her generation, plays Rita, an East End mum whose son George (Elliott Heffernan)
goes missing. It sounds intriguing even without the
casting of The Jam’s former front man Paul Weller —
in his feature film debut — as Rita’s father.
I’m also very much looking forward to another world premiere,
Joy, the story of the three brilliant British medical pioneers
whose work on IVF led to the world’s first ‘test-tube’ baby,
Louise Brown, in 1978.

It is directed by Ben Taylor, best-known for his TV work on shows such as Sex
Education and Catastrophe, and stars Bill Nighy, James Norton and Thomasin McKenzie.
I have heard great things about Conclave, the adaptation of
Robert Harris’s novel starring Ralph Fiennes and Stanley Tucci.
A couple of new documentaries catch the eye, too.
One of them is made by actress Sadie Frost, whose directing debut was a film about Mary Quant.
This time she turns to another fashion icon of the 1960s, with a feature
called Twiggy.
And Elton John: Never Too Late promises a ‘uniquely intimate’ look at the star’s
life and career. It’s been made by his long-time partner David Furnish,
so… we’ll see.

Lindsay Lohan has revealed she hasn’t had to audition since her notorious feature film debut in the 1998 version of The Parent
Trap.
The actress, 38, casually dropped the bombshell during
an appearance on Andy Cohen’s Watch What Happens Live, where she also shared a hilarious anecdote from the movie’s premiere.
The surprising admission came when Bravo star Andy, 56, asked whether there was
another role she auditioned for that she didn’t get.
‘I mean, the first movie I auditioned for was The Parent Trap, and I didn’t…
I haven’t auditioned since then,’ she said.
Fans were quick to brand Lindsay’s revelation as a ‘huge flex’ on social media, with
one writing: ‘Queen. They handed her roles.’
Another said: ‘Not having to Audition for anymore roles after
12 is a huge FLEX.

JAKARTA/LOS ANGELES, Nov 13 (Reuters) – Juul Labs Inc is
exploring selling its compact vaping devices in Asia and has
sounded out government officials in Indonesia, one of the world’s most smoker-friendly countries, although gaining approval there could face significant
hurdles.
Expansion into Asia would provide the fast-growing firm with
new markets at a time when it faces increased regulatory scrutiny in the United States and Israel
over the potential health risks of its products’ high nicotine content.
Juul representatives held discussions with the Indonesian government last month
about introducing its vaping devices, the country’s finance ministry officials told Reuters.
Indonesia has one of the world’s highest rates of smoking among adults and teenage
boys and imposes no penalties for selling cigarettes to minors.
It also has a population of 260 million, making it a highly attractive market for
tobacco and vaping firms.
A person familiar with Juul’s plans said executives for the
San Francisco-based company are concerned authorities may be reluctant to grant approval due to likely opposition from
the traditional tobacco industry, which provides much of Indonesia’s tax revenue.
Tobacco taxes accounted for nearly 150 trillion rupiah ($10.2 billion) or
about 11 percent of national tax revenue in 2017, government data showed.
Each province also imposes taxes on cigarettes.
Juul is also worried its argument that vaping is healthier
than smoking will not hold much sway in Indonesia, which
is not as concerned as other countries about health issues, said the
person, declining to be identified as the discussions were not public.
Juul representatives reached out to the finance ministry to
discuss how it would be taxed on any sales of devices there,
the Indonesian officials said.
The government needs to examine the domestic e-cigarette market to determine
how a foreign player such as Juul could hurt local small and labour-intensive e-cigarette firms, said Sunaryo, a senior official in Indonesia’s customs and
excise office, who like many Indonesians uses only one name.
“We will need it to study it,” he said, adding he wasn’t sure Juul would comply with a
regulation that requires e-cigarette devices and liquids to be sold separately.
Juul also would need approval from Indonesia’s Food and Drug Agency.
Officials at the agency said Juul had yet to be in touch.
Other Asian countries the three-year old
firm is actively considering for expansion include India, South Korea and the Philippines, the person familiar with
Juul’s plans said.
In addition to Indonesia, Juul filed trademark applications for those countries between April and October 2018, as well as in Malaysia and Singapore, according to a Reuters review of government filings.
It opened its first Asia office in Singapore in July.
So far Juul, currently valued at $16 billion, is available only in the United States, Canada, the
UK and Israel. It has plans to enter Russia later this year.
Juul said in a statement to Reuters it is “proactively learning more” and engaging with local officials in Asia “to understand and hear their views.” It does not have immediate plans to
launch in any Asian country, it said. Juul spokeswoman Victoria Davis declined to elaborate.
A TAXING QUESTION
Indonesia is one of only a handful of United Nations member states that has not
signed on to the World Health Organization’s global treaty that
sets standards for tobacco control.
Roughly two-thirds of Indonesian men smoke tobacco daily,
and more than 21 percent of boys aged 13-15 smoked cigarettes regularly, according to a
WHO report last year.
E-cigarettes, available in Indonesia since at least 2013, are a small but growing market.
The customs office estimated there are about 300 unsupervised liquid makers known as brewers in Indonesia, producing
various liquid products to more than 4,000 vape stores and 900,000 smokers.
Philip Morris International Inc, maker of Marlboro cigarettes, which now controls about a
third of Indonesia’s market through its stake in Sampoerna, does not offer any of its non-combustible cigarette
products in Indonesia.
That includes its IQOS device, a heat-not-burn tobacco product, according to a company spokesman, who declined to
comment on why it has not introduced the product.
In October, the government imposed a 57 percent tax on electronic-cigarette liquids, on par with taxes on traditional cigarettes.
But tax collection, particularly from smaller companies, is
difficult in Indonesia and new rules are often ignored.
Juul now commands nearly 75 percent of U.S. e-cigarette market share, up
from 13.6 percent in early 2017, according to a Wells Fargo analysis of Nielsen retail data.
Its products, like most electronic cigarettes, vaporize a liquid containing nicotine.
One Juul pod contains as much nicotine as a traditional pack of 20 cigarettes, according to
the company’s U.S. marketing.
Juul liquid in the U.S. has a nicotine concentration of 59 milligrams
per milliliter, much higher than the liquids typically sold in earlier
versions of e-cigarettes and nearly three times the allowable limit in the European Union.
In August, Israel banned Juul devices with nicotine concentration of more than 20 mg/mL, citing “a grave risk to public health.” Juul
is appealing that decision and currently offers a lower nicotine-strength electronic cigarette in Israel.
In September, the U.S. Food and Drug Administration opened an investigation into
Juul and other electronic cigarette companies, citing the rising number
of teens who appear to be using Juul and other vaping devices.
This week it is expected to issue a ban on fruit and candy-flavoured e-cigarettes sold in convenience stores and gas
stations.
In its statement to Reuters, Juul said its products are intended for
adult use only, and that it aims to “improve the lives of the world’s one billion adult smokers” by providing
an alternative to cigarettes.

Lady Gaga is set to release her seventh studio
album in February.
Despite lead single Disease stalling on the Hot 100 at No.
27, the 38-year-old is forging ahead with her
next album, which she described as both ‘fun’ and ‘darker.’
Speaking to Vogue magazine about the project, Gaga said that she’s been focused on the production side of her new songs.
‘I love producing — I always have — and something that was really important to me making my
seventh studio album was blending live instrumentation with programming,’ she explained.
‘The album is chaotic from a genre perspective — it
is genre-bending, and I think in that way is a deeply personal look into my mind as a producer and the way I
think about music.’
She also said that the album has a ‘darker pop’ sound that’s
more in line with her iconic 2009 album, The
Fame Monster.
However, fans need not be worried that Gaga is going too
somber with her sound.
‘The album is not extremely serious in that it’s very fun and meant to be enjoyed
at a party, in a club, or at home having
personal fun time — to be free of your worries
at home or walking through life,’ she insisted.
Lady Gaga is focused on releasing her seventh studio album
this February following the disappointing reception to lead
single Disease
Gaga released the album’s lead single Disease last
month to rave reviews from music critics, who lauded it as a return to the star’s roots.
Unfortunately, the acclaim failed to translate to the charts,
with Disease debuting at No. 27 on the Hot 100
– her worst entry for a lead single in 16 years.
On the bright side, Gaga is currently enjoying one of her biggest hits in years thanks to her Bruno Mars duet, Die With a Smile.
The ballad has so far reached No. 2 on the Hot 100 and No.
1 on the Pop Airplay Chart.
It comes after Gaga’s leading role in the disastrous Joker: Folie à Deux.
The follow-up to the Oscar-winning 2019 film,
starring Joaquin Phoenix as Arthur Fleck (Joker) and Gaga as Lee Quinzel (Harley Quinn), faced negative reviews from critics before its
October 4 release and flopped at the box office.
Tim, 39, who played a guard at Arkham Asylum in the movie, said Todd Philips’s new film has ‘no plot’ and admitted he knew it
was ‘going to bomb’ while filming.
Speaking on The Joe Rogan Experience podcast, Tim said:

of them and we’d hear this crap and I’d go, “What the f*** is this?” And
they’d go, “This is going to bomb, man.” I go, “This is the worst thing I’ve ever seen.”
‘We were talking about it at lunch, and we’d go, “What is the plot? Is there a plot? I don’t know, I think he falls in love with her in the prison?”
It’s not even hate-watchable. That’s how terrible it is.’
