Премьер-министр Индии Нарендра Моди пообещал в течение пяти лет провести в родной стране «генеральную уборку». Акция, о начале которой объявил Моди, носит название «Чистая Индия».
Символом «Чистой Индии» Моди избрал круглые очки Махатмы Ганди: как полагает премьер, одним из главных устремлений великого пацифиста было видеть свою страну ухоженной. Соответственно, срок окончания акции чиновник приурочил к 150-летию со дня рождения Ганди, которое наступит в 2019 году. К этому моменту улицы Индии должны стать чистым, а у каждого гражданина страны появятся питьевая вода и личный туалет.
Достигать поставленной цели Моди решил двумя способами: во-первых – путем организации общественного движения, участники которого уже пообещали ежегодно тратить на уборку 100 часов. Во-вторых – путем ужесточения штрафов за выброс мусора. Теперь штраф составляет 5 тысяч рупий, т. е. около 80 долларов. Всего на масштабную уборку из государственного бюджета будут выделены средства в размере до 2 трлн. рупий (ок. 33 млрд. долларов).
