Корея признана страной с самыми эффективными показателями переработки бумаги и картона в рейтинге, опубликованном ассоциацией RISI. Показатели общей переработки макулатуры в год достигли 92%. Объёмы годовой переработки (11,8 млн тонн) обеспечили Корее пятое место, по этим показателям её обогнали страны Америки и Китай.
Подобное развитие структур переработки связано с корейской политикой снижения зависимости от импорта целлюлозы, который наносит удар экономике страны. Главным мировым производителем и потребителем бумаги остаётся Китай – в нём производится 26% мирового экспорта бумаги.
Сокращение производства пока что затронуло только США и страны Евросоюза. Тем не менее, Соединённые штаты удерживают лидерство в производстве целлюлозы: годовой объем производства достиг 49 млн тонн. Второе место с показателем в 17,3 млн тонн занимает Канада, а за ней с показателем в 17,1 млн тонн следует Китай.
