The 50-year-old actor – whose latest flick Joker: Folie À Deux could
be streamed now – got candid about potentially playing the
supervillain before he actually portrayed him.
Joaquin recently appeared on Rick Rubin’s Tetragrammaton podcast as he revealed that he spoke to the
54-year-old Oscar-winning filmmaker Nolan about portraying Joker over a decade
before.
He said: That didn’t… wasn’t going to happen for a number

and about $100 million on marketing and distribution, according to the report.

DC’ during the making of the film, with DC bosses James Gunn and Peter Safran notably absent from the film’s LA
premiere afterparty last month.
A source said: ‘If the first movie was about
some down-on-his-luck, mentally ill guy
in a downtrodden city, it makes maybe $150 [million] worldwide.
Not a billion. People showed up because that guy was Joker.’
In an apparent snub by Phillips, the opening sequence of the film does not include a DC Studios logo.
A Warner spokesman added that a DC logo appears at the end of the Joker
sequel, while Phillips declined to comment to the publication.
Several frictions are said to have developed between Phillips,
DC and Warner- with claims that Michael DeLuca, Chairperson of Warner
Bros. Entertainment, and CEO Pamela Abdy seemed ‘unwilling’
to say no to Phillips due to his huge past successes.
It is claimed Phillips would ‘only’ speak with DeLuca and Abdy
rather than Gunn and Safran – who took control of DC two months before production began on Joker 2
in December 2022.
Gunn and Safran did attend the first director’s cut screening for the
studio but Phillips fueled rift speculation when he told a reporter: ‘With all due respect to them, this is
kind of a Warner Bros. movie.’
Warner Bros. Discovery CEO David Zaslav also met with Phillips shortly after WarnerMedia and
Discovery merged in April 2022 and was ‘open to filming in Los Angeles if
the director would make the sequel at a lower price point.’
The studio wanted to film in London which would have cost around 20 per cent less.

Insiders also claim studio bosses did not want to premiere the film at the
Venice Film Festival, but Phillips pushed back – with a Warner spokesman saying the
studio ‘fully supported the decision to bring the film to Venice.
Along with Gaga and Phoenix, other stars that had appeared in the sequel
include Brendan Gleeson, Catherine Keener, Zazie Beatz and
Steve Coogan.

Australian politicians are almost always opting to fly with Qantas
on taxpayer-funded trips, despite Virgin offering cheaper
tickets.
Federal MPs flew with the national carrier for 80 per cent
of work trips last year despite it not always being the
cheapest route, according to travel data provided
to the government.
While politicians and their staffers are required to book the cheapest
flight, it also has to be the most efficient, with Qantas offering the most routes between major cities.
MPs are banned from accruing frequent flyer points on taxpayer-funded trips like ordinary Aussies can, but they can can receive
lifetime status credits, which allows access to airport lounges and flight upgrades.
‘How else can one explain the extraordinary dominance of Qantas in securing bookings by
parliamentarians and their staff?’ Myriam Robin wrote in an opinion piece for the
Australian Financial Review.
‘There’s nothing like accruing status credits on someone else’s dime.’
Transport Minister Catherine King has since committed to a review of flight bookings by government officials which will be conducted by the Department of Finance this year, despite there being just two months
left of 2024.
Politicians’ preference for Qantas may also be put down to the
airline’s exclusive invite-only ‘Chairman’s Lounge’.

Namibians returned to vote on Friday in 36 polling stations
reopened two days after a chaotic election, set to test the ruling party’s
34-year grip on power, was marred by technical problems.
Tensions are mounting in the historically stable and peaceful southern African nation where Wednesday’s
election was marked by long delays and labelled a
“sham” by the opposition.
Some people waited 12 hours in line to vote in presidential and legislative
polls, billed as the toughest yet for the South West Africa People’s
Organisation (SWAPO) party, in power since Namibia’s 1990 independence
from South africa.
Wednesday’s queues were caused by many technical problems, including issues with tablets
used to register voters and shortages of ballot papers.
In some cases, torches used to show up invisible ink had run out of batteries and mobile voting teams had left areas with voters still in the queues,
it said.
Facing criticism from both voters and parties, the electoral commission extended the vote for a second time, giving Namibians until Saturday evening to vote.
In the capital Windhoek, at the only polling station picked to reopen, about 60 people showed up on Friday,
including Kluivert Muuondjo who arrived at 4:30 am.
The 21-year-old student said he had waited in line until 11:00 pm on Wednesday but left before being able to vote as he had exams the next
day.

“Everyone will have the chance to vote,” he said. But because Namibians can vote at any given polling station, he was worried “everyone will flock to one place again.”
The disarray led to angry complaints from opposition parties with some calling for a
halt in the electoral process.
Opposition parties were scheduled to meet on Friday and issue a joint statement, according to Christine Aochamus who represents the Independent Patriots for Change (IPC) party.
Youth unemployment, enduring inequalities and the emergence of a generation born after independence are challenging
support towards SWAPO which has ruled since 1990.
Its candidate, vice-president Netumbo Nandi-Ndaitwah, who could become the first woman to lead
the country if elected, could face an unprecedented second round in the mineral rich country.
“To open only one place in Khomas (the region of which the capital is part of) is absurd,” said voter Ensley Engermund,
who also said he couldn’t vote on Wednesday because of long queues despite trying
four different polling stations.
“Only 1.5 millions voters are registered and we get this chaos?” asked the
49-year-old security agent.
“It was to get people frustrated.”

Director Todd, told Entertainment Weekly: ‘When those guards kill
that kid in the [hospital] he realises that dressing up in makeup, putting on this thing, it’s not
changing anything.
‘In some ways, he’s accepted the fact that he’s always been Arthur Fleck; he’s never been this thing that’s been put
upon him, this idea that Gotham people put on him, that he represents.
‘He’s an unwitting icon. This thing was placed on him, and he doesn’t want to live as a fake anymore — he wants to be who he is.’
The movie serves as a follow-up to Phoenix’s 2019 box office hit, which was simply
titled Joker.
The Todd Phillips-directed musical was released in theatres on October 4, following an October
2 international release.

SHANGHAI, Dec 6 (Reuters) – The yuan was little changed on Friday against the dollar,
but is headed for its tenth straight weekly loss amid concerns
that new tariff threatened by President-elect Donald Trump will heighten strains
on the struggling Chinese economy.
Analysts expect the dollar to remain firm as Trump’s policies are expected
to drive up U.S. inflation, but they believe Beijing will prevent the yuan from falling too much.
“We anticipate some depreciation pressure in an expected strong dollar environment,” Lynn Song, Greater China chief
economist at ING, said in a note.
However, “we don’t expect an intentional large-scale depreciation and think the yuan will remain a low-volatility currency vis-à-vis most other Asian currencies.” The
yuan was changing hands at 7.2549 per dollar around midday, little moved from the previous close.
Although the currency has rebounded from a one-year low of 7.2996
hit on Tuesday, it is poised to register its longest
weekly losing streak since 2018.
The dollar index fell to one-week low overnight and “the USD’s consolidation should unwind the upside pressure building” in the yuan, aided by ongoing attempts by China’s central bank to restrain its
decline, said Alvin Tan, strategist at RBC Capital Markets.
Recent data has painted a mixed picture of China’s economic recovery, with manufacturing activities improving, but
property sales in many Chinese cities remaining weak.
China’s “economic landscape is unarguably dull, and the absence of excitement is perhaps the most salient feature,” said John Browning,
managing director of BANDS Financial. He doesn’t expect huge stimulus to be announced during
next week’s Central Economic Work Conference, as “Beijing’s largesse will be reserved until after Trump is restored to the White House and the trade war formally begins.” Top policymakers
will gather at the conference to agree on major
economic goals for next year.
But the target for 2025 growth, one of the most closely-watched
indicators globally for clues of Beijing’s near-term
policy intentions, likely will not be officially announced
until an annual parliament meeting in March. During
Trump’s first term as president, the yuan weakened about 5% against the dollar after the initial round of U.S.
tariffs on Chinese goods in 2018, and fell another 1.5% a year later
when trade tensions escalated. Growth worries and expectations
of further monetary easing by Beijing pushed China’s 10-year treasury
yields below 2% to record lows this week, worsening the yield disadvantage against the U.S., and exerting downward pressure on the yuan.

Nothing signals the start of winter quite like the return of the Fair Isle knit.
Once considered ‘ugly’ knitwear we’d only pull out
from the back of our wardrobes as an alternative to a Christmas jumper (especially the red-nosed
reindeer kind à la Mark Darcy in Bridget Jones’s Diary) or
for a winter sport holiday (specifically for après-ski),
the Fair Isle jumper has now become somewhat of a fashion statement.
The knit is named after the small, eponymous Shetland Island
in Scotland and uses a traditional knitting technique to create those distinctive patterns with multiple colours.
It was brought into vogue by an earlier Prince of Wales
(later Edward VIII) in the 1920s, and has remained a
casual wardrobe staple for members of the Royal Family, including Kate Middleton, whose jumper
collection includes at least three different Fair Isle designs.

Jackie O Henderson has left her father Tony red-faced after a shocking stunt in which he was tricked into reading about her threesome live on-air.

I’d be so excited.
‘I’ve been round the block a few times. I understand how these
things happen.’
Another passage in the book revealed a very awkward encounter between Phil’s male
flatmate and Jackie’s mother Julie.
‘My mum came over once and when no one answered the door,
she put her face to the screen to see inside and that flatmate was

But in Tucson there is little unanimity among young voters.
“I do think that abortion is murder,” said Pedro Lopez, a 20-year-old college student.
“There are cases of incest or rape” that merit exceptions, he conceded, “but that’s very small.”
He also worries about the flow of undocumented migrants that have entered the country from Mexico during the Biden-Harris administration.
“People that are entering the United States illegally… should be sent back to where they came from,” he said.
“My grandparents migrated from Mexico to the United States, and they did it the right way.”
So he plans not only to vote for Trump, but to back the
proposal to let local law enforcement detain, arrest and prosecute anyone

“I know people that work for the Border Patrol, and they’re really upset because this current administration has really tied their hands up. They’re not really able to do anything,” Lopez said.

The major political parties see the competing referendums as offering an opportunity to mobilize

But the referendums may not have the clear impact on the race for the White House that activists hope.
Polls show Trump and Harris running neck-and-neck in Arizona, with the Republican holding
a very narrow lead.
Both ballot questions, meantime, have drawn strong support and both
appear likely to pass.
So the abortion issue may not be “helping Democrats in the way that they would hope,” said Jenny Brian, a professor of bioethics at
Arizona State University.
Many Republican women will vote both to protect abortion rights and
to bring Trump back to the White House, Brian said.
Though abortion is sometimes framed as a Democrat vs.
Republican issue, the Republican Party includes
“a broad spectrum of views on the topic,” an issue that also
raises conservatives’ concerns about “government interference,”
she added.
The same dynamic applies to immigration, with the

released the film in 4,102 locations in North America.
About 12.5 percent of its domestic total came from 415 IMAX screens.
Internationally, it’s earned $81.1 million from 25,788 screens, bringing
its total global earnings estimate to $121.1 million. In the next two weeks,
Joker 2 will also open in Japan and China.
Second place went to Universal and DreamWorks Animation’s The Wild Robot, which added $18.7 million in its second weekend, bringing
its domestic total to nearly $64 million. Globally, it’s
made over $100 million. Warner Bros.’ Beetlejuice Beetlejuice took third place in weekend five, Paramount’s Transformers One landed in fourth and Universal and Blumhouse’s Speak No Evil rounded out the top five.
The other big new release of the weekend, Lionsgate’s White Bird,
flopped with just $1.5 million from just over 1,000 locations, despite an A+ CinemaScore.
Overall, the weekend is up from the same frame last year, but Joker’s start is an unwelcome twist for theater owners hoping to narrow the box office deficit.

‘They took a swing for the fences,’ Dergarabedian said. ‘But except for
a couple of outliers, audiences in 2024 seem to want to know what they´re getting when they´re going to the theater.
They want the tried and true, the familiar.’
Deadline editor Anthony D´Alessandro thinks the problem started with the idea to make the Joker sequel a musical.
‘No fan of the original movie wanted to see a
musical sequel,’ he wrote on Saturday.
The first film was also divisive and the subject
of much discourse, then about whether it might send the wrong message to the wrong type of
person. And yet people still flocked to see what the
fuss was about. Joker went on to pick up 11 Oscar nominations,
including best picture and best director, and three wins.
It also made over $1 billion and was the highest-grossing R-rated
film of all time, until this summer when Marvel’s Deadpool & Wolverine took the crown.
Estimated ticket sales for Friday through Sunday at U.S.
and Canadian theaters, according to Comscore.

familiar with director Todd Phillips’ process telling Variety he ‘wanted nothing to do with DC’ during the making of the film, with DC bosses James Gunn and Peter Safran notably absent from the film’s LA premiere afterparty last month.
A source said: ‘If the first movie was about some
down-on-his-luck, mentally ill guy in a downtrodden city, it makes maybe $150 [million] worldwide.
Not a billion. People showed up because that guy was Joker.’
In an apparent snub by Phillips, the opening sequence
of the film does not include a DC Studios logo.
A Warner spokesman added that a DC logo appears
at the end of the Joker sequel, while Phillips
declined to comment to the publication.
Several frictions are said to have developed between Phillips, DC and Warner- with claims that Michael DeLuca, Chairperson of
Warner Bros. Entertainment, and CEO Pamela Abdy seemed ‘unwilling’
to say no to Phillips due to his huge past successes.
It is claimed Phillips would ‘only’ speak with DeLuca and Abdy
rather than Gunn and Safran – who took control of DC two months before
production began on Joker 2 in December 2022.
Gunn and Safran did attend the first director’s cut screening
for the studio but Phillips fueled rift speculation when he told a reporter: ‘With all due respect to
them, this is kind of a Warner Bros. movie.’
Warner Bros. Discovery CEO David Zaslav also met with Phillips
shortly after WarnerMedia and Discovery merged in April 2022 and
was ‘open to filming in Los Angeles if the director would make the sequel at a lower price point.’
The studio wanted to film in London which would have cost around 20 per
cent less.
A source directly involved with the film recently shared:
‘The one thing about genre stuff: If you don’t listen and pay attention to what the fan expectations are, you’re going to fail';

However, Phillips insisted on filming in LA with the budget remaining static.
A Warner spokesman told the publication the studio ‘supported the decision to film in Los Angeles’.

attention to what the fan expectations are, you’re going to fail.
Insiders also claim studio bosses did not want to premiere the film at the
Venice Film Festival, but Phillips pushed back – with
a Warner spokesman saying the studio ‘fully supported the decision to bring the film to
Venice.
Along with Gaga and Phoenix, other stars that had appeared in the sequel include
Brendan Gleeson, Catherine Keener, Zazie Beatz and Steve Coogan.

Speaking at the Venice Film Festival he said: ‘I’m not going to talk through specifics of the diet,
because I just think nobody wants to hear that.
‘But this time, it felt a bit more complicated just because there was so much dance
rehearsal that we were doing, which I didn’t have last time.
‘It felt a bit more difficult, but it is safe. But you’re right,
I’m now 49, I probably shouldn’t do this again. This is probably
it for me.’
