US pop star Lady Gaga has taken on a track known best to Aussies as
the opening theme to the iconic comedy series Kath & Kim.
The song, originally written by Leslie Bricusse and Anthony Newley
for the 1964 stage musical The Roar Of The Greasepaint – The Smell Of The Crowd, is performed by Gaga
for her film Joker: Folie à Deux.
To most Australians, it is the bold and brassy version sung by Gina Riley, who also plays Kimberly Diane ‘Kim’
Craig (née Day) in the legendary comedy.
Before being immortalised in to the fabric of Australian pop culture, thanks to Gina’s rendition, the song had been covered by
the likes of Shirley Bassey in 1968 and Sammy Davis Jr
in 1965.
And now, the Born This Way hitmaker has taken a stab
at the track – with the results markedly different to
the brassy feel of the Kath & Kim version.
Gaga’s take, which also features on her new album Harlequin, is
a much more stripped back that builds to a crescendo thanks to rocking guitars.
Speaking to Today Extra about the track, Kath
& Kim star Peter Rowsthorn joked that he was ‘constantly’
hounded by the US pop star regarding the track.
‘She’s constantly calling me, so I know she’s a big fan,’ Pete,
who play’s Kim’s on-again-off-again husband Brett in the series, said.

across three seasons from 2002 to 2005.

The hit comedy also boasted a litany of high-profile guest stars including

The existence of an exclusive hideaway for the country’s movers and shakers where secret deals were done
in private luxury first exploded into the public eye back in 2007.
Back then, the fact that Qantas spent hundreds of thousands of dollars wining and dining the nation’s political elite in ultra-exclusive VIP lounges was relatively unknown.
It was a time before Alan Joyce’s tenure as
the CEO of Qantas had even started, when he was boss of
the comparatively lowly budget airline, Jetstar.
And unlike Anthony Albanese’s current slide in the polls
leading up to an election in next year, the prospects back in 2007
were rosy for Labor.
The election that was looming was the ‘Kevin 07′ landslide that
would see Kevin Rudd become prime minister and John Howard lose his own seat.
The issue which blew open the ‘guilty secret’ of the Chairman’s
Lounge then wasn’t about a prime minister’s privileges, although John Howard and Kevin Rudd were certainly both members during their terms as
PM.
But when broadcaster Steve Price – himself a long time Chairman’s Lounge member – revealed a
politically charged remark made within the club’s hallowed walls, the cat
was out of the bag.
The political revelation – a comment by ex-rock star turned senator Peter Garrett
that Labor would change the policies it campaigned on if it won government – did not
deter his party from romping in on election day.
In contrast, the scandal currently engulfing Anthony Albanese about his Chairman’s Lounge membership and that of his ex-wife Carmel Tebbutt, and their son Nathan could bring down the
prime minister.

Broadcaster Steve Price revealed he had been a Chairman’s Lounge member since 2002 during a
row before the 2007 election won by Kevin Rudd which let the cat out of

The existence of the lounge was so little known back in 2007 that in defending his disclosure of Garrett’s remark, Steve Price had
to explain what the private enclave actually was.
In a first person piece he wrote: ‘The Chairman’s Lounge is a separate frequent flyers
lounge away from the crowded normal Qantas Club.
‘As its name implies, the people given access to it are approved by the Qantas chairman, Margaret Jackson.
‘I have been a Chairman’s Lounge member since 2002.’
In his opinion piece, Price also revealed TV entertainment reporter
Richard Wilkins was also a member of lounge.
Wilkins had also been inside at the time and was his
only witness to the remark Price said Garrett had made.
Other prominent media figures, such as 60 Minutes reporters, actors and performers, and
well-known writers and sports people are said to be among the lounge’s exclusive membership of around 6000.
Price went on to defend himself for reporting what some claimed was a confidential conversation in a private place, but which exposed him to criticism over his own membership for allegedly promoting Qantas
on his radio show.

One observer has described the relationship bet6ween leading politicians

‘Why on earth is Qantas giving a controversial shock jock membership of its Chairman’s Lounge, which is supposedly to enable our elite politicians and business leaders some privacy from the hoi polloi?’ demanded Crikey
reporter Stephen Mayne at the time.
‘The Chairman’s Lounge is meant to be all about discretion and confidentiality,’
he said, accusing Price of breaking ‘a confidence’.
The following year, before he was succeeded as
Qantas CEO by Alan Joyce, Geoff Dixon was the sole gatekeeper of entry into the club’s hushed confines.
Qantas Chairman’s Lounge membership was ‘so exclusive
that you have to be personally invited by the
airline’s chieftain’, Nine newspapers reported in 2008.
‘A marvellous benefit of lounge membership is that the mega rich and powerful avoid having to mingle with the riffraff who will be travelling cattle class.
‘Having said that, members of the ultra-exclusive club have included Pauline Hanson.
‘Another lounge member is Brad Cooper, who is currently enjoying a prolonged exposure to cattle-class in Kirkconnell Correctional Centre.’ (Cooper
was the former HIH insurance executive jailed for
eight years on fraud and bribery offences).

The report noted that politicians declaring membership of the
lounge ‘which most of their spouses got too’ in their pecuniary interests
that year included Liberal MPs of the day, Philip Ruddock, Bob Baldwin and
Andrew Southcott.
Labor MPs with lounge privileges included Tanya Plibersek, Bob McMullan, and Sharon Grierson, and Martin Ferguson declared a bottle of Grange hermitage as a gift from
Qantas, as did Liberal, Christopher Pyne.
Asked if all MPs got the captain’s pick from Geoff Dixon, the airline’s spokesperson told Nine: ‘We like to retain a bit
of mystery. Membership is by invitation only and it is reviewed periodically.’
Fast forward to today, and nearly every single federal
politician in the country has accepted free membership of the controversial, invitation-only lounge with one
even describing it as an ‘entitlement’.
Qantas and the Albanese government recently denied the ‘very, very high-end perk’ gives
the airline a disproportionate level of influence over the country’s politicians.
They were commenting ahead of the launch of the new book
The Chairman’s Lounge by former Australian Financial Review columnist Joe Aston, which
has stirred up the controversy.
A Daily Mail Australia audit of the members’ interest registers – in both Federal Parliament’s House of Representatives
and the Senate – revealed almost 93 per cent of the nation’s leaders
have been ‘gifted’ membership to the lavish, all-inclusive lounge.
Mr Albanese has defended himself by saying he
declared all his benefits in pecuniary interest statements.
At a press conference this week, he repeated that all of his upgrades ‘have been declared as appropriate.
What’s appropriate is transparency.’
Apart from the PM, members include every one of his 22-person Cabinet, his seven-person Outer Ministry and all 12 assistant ministers.

former deputy Barnaby Joyce are also among the swathes of politicians who have
disclosed they have taken up free membership to the contentious club.
Bill Shorten is a member, Tanya Plibersek is still a
member and so is Teal MP, Zali Steggall.
Last year it was reported that Australian Competition and Consumer Commission chairwoman Gina
Cass-Gottlieb and Australian Securities and Investments
Commission chairman Joe Longo and some of their deputies are members of
the Chairman’s Lounge despite regulating the airline.
Senior public servants in the club included Department of Prime
Minister and Cabinet secretary Glyn Davis, deputy secretaries Nadine
Williams, Liz Hefren-Webb, Rachel Bacon and ambassador to Beijing, Scott Dewar.
Other Qantas freebies bestowed on members include numerous business class flight upgrades, model Qantas aircrafts, frequent flyer points, and tickets to sporting and entertainment
events.
Touted as ‘the most exclusive club in the country’, membership to the Chairman’s Lounge is still veiled in secrecy.

The select few to take a principled stand on the issue

Geoffrey Watson SC, a former counsel assisting
the Independent Commission Against Corruption and a director of
the Centre for Public Integrity, has implored all politicians and policymakers
to follow suit.
‘There are certain positions in life where you cannot take Chairman’s
Club membership,’ he said.
‘You’re taking public money for the job and you are
supposed to represent the public. Why not sit with them while you’re waiting for a plane?’

a top confidante and counselor. Whether as an international business mogul, a TV star or, lately, leader of the
free world, it is Melania’s opinion that he has consistently
sought.
Trump enjoys the company of plenty of friends, taking a range of advice, but he speaks of – and to – Melania
in an entirely unique way. Really, he fears yet reveres her.
He respects her independence, seeks her input, trusts her keen eye, sharp ear and sense of people.
I have witnessed their relationship up close, and it
is one fundamentally built on mutual love and respect.
Recently, as Barron was heading off for college and Melania was preparing to publish her memoir, I jokingly asked Trump how it might feel to be the second most popular man and the second most
prominent author in the household. He chuckled and relented.
Melania Trump has plenty to say and nothing to prove.
She is not a typical political spouse rushing to the cameras on matters that are best handled privately, or loudly offering
insights or slights about her husband’s political opponents à la Hillary
Clinton and Michelle Obama.
She is an asset, a partner, an equal who is neither trying to control – looking at you,
Jill Biden – nor controlled by her partner. She is
what many feminists insist they are: independent, a product of
her own choices, comfortable in her own skin.
She has been by Trump’s side the entire time.
Though never in his shadow. In fact, from that very first
moment they descended the golden escalator, she’s been leading the
way.

Jackie O Henderson has left her father Tony red-faced after a shocking stunt in which
he was tricked into reading about her threesome live on-air.
The awkward family exchange occurred on Tuesday’s Kyle
and Jackie O Show when the radio queen and co-host Kyle Sandilands were discussing Jackie’s new memoir The Whole Truth.
Before getting her father on the line, Jackie explained to listeners that she was
about to get an unsuspecting Tony to read an excerpt that detailed a night of passion with then boyfriend ‘Ugly’ Phil O’Neil and a
19-year-old stripper.
‘So this is going back to my Gold Coast days when I had met
Phil who [later became] my first husband,’ the 49-year-old explained.
‘I had only just met him at this point. I think [we were] two months into seeing each other.’
Jackie then prompted her unprepared father to read the excerpt
that detailed Phil’s living situation with the stripper and another, rather unsavory ‘stoner’ flatmate.
‘He lived in a place in Main Beach that felt like a motel with two weird flatmates.
One was a stoner guy who would sit there blazed out of his gourd,

‘I’m sort of trying to take all of this in. After all, its my daughter we’re talking about.
If it was somebody else, it would be a different story altogether.
I’d be so excited.
‘I’ve been round the block a few times. I understand how these things happen.’
Another passage in the book revealed a very awkward encounter between Phil’s male flatmate and Jackie’s mother Julie.
‘My mum came over once and when no one answered the
door, she put her face to the screen to see inside and that flatmate was right there in the living room, pants down, w***ing,’ a shocked Tony read.

Hamas’ leader Yahya Sinwar could have given an order to execute all the hostages who remain in Gaza if he
died, a top Israeli negotiator has claimed.
Sinwar died on Wednesday after the IDF encountered
him by chance, sending a drone to kill the terror leader.
Gershon Baskin, the Israeli negotiator who oversaw Sinwar’s 2011 release from an Israeli prison, along with 1,026 Palestinian prisoners, in exchange for the return of kidnapped soldier
Gilad Shilat, said that his death was a ‘moment of either opportunity or
a moment of doom.’
‘A moment of doom because there are rumours that Sinwar instructed people holding hostages that,
should he be killed, they should kill their hostages,’ he told the
Telegraph.
At the time of Sinwar’s death, just over 100 hostages remained in Gaza, with 60 thought to still be alive.
Those who remain alive are at risk of never being returned to
their families, according Haaretz, which reported on Sunday that top
US officials, including Secretary of State Anthony Blinken, have assessed there is a slim chance of a deal being brokered,
given the tensions between Israel and Hamas.

at this stage.’
While Baskin told the Telegraph that it wasn’t possible to confirm whether Sinwar had a kill order on the hostages, he said the rumours ought to be taken seriously, given how little Hamas appears to care
for them.
He cited the horrific killing of six hostages in tunnels under Rafah in late August.
Israeli military spokesman Daniel Hagari said the six were ‘cruelly murdered by
Hamas just a short time before we got to them.’
The six dead hostages were identified as Eden Yerushalmi, 24, Carmel Gat,
39, Almog Sarusi, 26, Alex Lubnov, 26, Ori Danino, 25, and Hersh Goldberg-Polin, 23.
Five of those who were recovered had been attending the Nova
music festival when Hamas terrorists began slaughtering festivalgoers, while taking others hostage.
Gat was at her family kibbutz when she was captured.

The Department of Infrastructure, Transport, Regional Development, Communications,
and the Arts has warned Australian audiences to
prepare for scenes of graphic violence, dismemberment and disturbing
themes that go well beyond typical horror fare.
The film includes brutal depictions of murder using a variety
of weapons, from chainsaws to axes and guns, resulting in explicit injury detail and copious amounts of blood.
The warning also highlights that the movie portrays self-harm,
cannibalism, animal cruelty and violence involving children, pushing the
boundaries of what the most hardened horror fans has seen before.
One of the film’s more controversial moments includes a scene of implied masturbation coupled with self-harm, along with a shower

The Terrifier franchise, which began in 2016, quickly gained a cult
following due to its extreme violence and over-the-top death
scenes.
The first film, which saw Art the Clown mutilate
a victim with a hacksaw, shocked audiences with its brutal kill sequences.
The sequel, Terrifier 2, went viral last year after reports emerged that
viewers were fainting and vomiting in cinemas due to its graphic content.
Now, with Terrifier 3, Leone has doubled down on the carnage, taking the gore to new, unsettling levels.
Despite Australia’s strict film censorship laws, Terrifier 3 was approved for theatrical release with
a strong warning attached.
The film’s notoriety has only heightened its appeal to horror fans, who continue to fill cinemas across the country.
Earlier this month, two people fainted and fled for the exit when it hit a Perth cinema for early previews.
According to multiple eye witness accounts, one
young woman badly injured herself after she fell down the cinema stairs while
fleeing the movie theatre.
‘This is going to sound made up and I promise you it’s
not,’ Australian horror film critic Emma Clarke began her review of David Leone’s controversial new horror-slasher.
The Rotten Tomatoes verified critic said two people fainted right in front of her during the
screening she attended at Innaloo Cinemas in Perth over the weekend.
The first fainted during the opening scene, she said in her film review
shared to YouTube, and the second nearer to the end of the two-house spectacle.
‘Can you tell me… why did two people feint right in front of me during that film?’ she said.
‘Both trying to run down the stairs to get to the bathrooms because
they felt so queasy.’
The horror film fanatic said she spoke to both people and tried to assist them because she was seated directly behind them.
The first was a man, who left with a friend who came to check on him, and
second Australian victim was a young woman.
‘This poor girl gashed her head open as she fell down the stairs, I felt so bad for her.
I went and checked on her afterwards,’ Clarke claimed.
‘She did get help. She was with her friend. It really shook me up too.
It actually took me out of the film for the moment.’
The reviewer, who has been sharing her thoughts on scary movies
for the past four years, said she has never seen audience members have such a visceral
reaction to a film.

Clarke described the third installment of Leone’s series — which is set to

the girl and she had injuries. They were both

Yes, you guessed it. They are all ‘creatives’ on OnlyFans, the adults-only online content provider
founded in 2016 by a young Essex businessman called Tim Stokely,
which is now one of the most visited (and lucrative) websites in the world.
Just last month, Lily Allen caused a stir by revealing that she makes more money
charging $10 (£8) – the site works in dollars – for pictures of
her feet on her OnlyFans account labelled ‘La Dolca Feeta’ than she does from her 7.5million monthly
listeners on Spotify.
But Lily’s content is tame in comparison to much of the content on the site, the sort company execs refer
to as ‘spicy’. Everything from cheeky shots of bottoms peeking out of bubble baths,
blondes stirring vats of steaming pasta in G-strings, hot
men waxing cars in their pants, right through the sex spectrum to twosomes, threesomes, sixsomes and hardcore pornographic
videos.
But also because, thanks to the allure of OnlyFans and the astonishing sums that a
teeny number of the platform’s 4.1million creatives are raking in, more and more young women (and it is mostly young women) who would
never have considered it before are suddenly happy
to join in and sell photos of, well, pretty much anything, to pay rent,
settle credit card bills or splash out on nice holidays.
Basically, a flashier life all round.
‘We feel empowered. We have agency. It’s completely up to me if I take my top off or
not,’ says one 21-year-old girl, who joined a year ago
and makes enough in a week to cover a year’s student rent at Sheffield University and prefers
not to give her name.
‘And I am happy to do it because for once I
make the rules, in the safety of my home and they’re
paying me to do it. It’s a mug’s game, but I am not the mug.’
For the benefit of those readers who are not among the site’s 305million users,
OnlyFans offers creators a platform where they can charge their fans a subscription fee ranging from $4.99 to
$49.99 a month to look at their content, contact them
(or more often access their ‘chatter’ – more of which later) and access often more explicit,
personalised, ‘à la carte’ content through ‘tips’.

In 2023, the site generated a record $6.6billion (£5.2billion),
of which the company takes a straight 20 per cent – much less than YouTube – and the rest goes to the ‘performers’.
It is unlike Instagram or other social media sites in that nothing is suggested – instead, you have to search for, and then subscribe to, individual accounts to see much more than profile pictures.
Which is a good thing, because while some of the
content is anodyne, much is highly sexual and many people on the site can bob freely
from one to another. Perhaps a cookery hack one day,
modelling new boots the next, then graduate to a few cheeky cleavage and bikini shots and more,
as the money becomes more tempting.
Every week, it seems, we hear of someone who has made millions.
Last month it was announced that American influencer Corinna Kopf had retired from the site, aged 28, after making $67million (£53million).
In her best month, she reportedly earned more than $2million (£1.6million).
Rapper Cardi B is said to earn more than $9million (£7.1million) a month from
the site.
Meanwhile, Darcie Rattles was an out-of-work bricklayer with £6,000 in credit card bills and debts when she joined OnlyFans
in 2022.
‘I was thinking: how the hell am I going to get to next
week? How am I going to pay my credit cards?’ she says
in an online interview. ‘I’m young, I’ve got a good body and I’ve
got a lot of followers. It is what any girl would turn to.
It had been in the back of mind for two years,
but then I did it.’
Within two days of launching, she had earned enough to pay
off her debts. Today, Darcie, who comes across as likeable,
down-to-earth and has no qualms about what she shares, claims to earn more than £250,000 a year.

a 14-hour period. She has since announced she is planning to set a record of
having sex with 1,000 men in 24 hours.
And Bonnie Blue, a beautiful blonde with a golden tan and astonishingly white teeth, who has worked her way round Derby, Nottingham, Cancun and Australia,
sleeping with university students.
On one night during Nottingham Trent freshers’ week – after publicising her
stunt by wearing a sandwich board that read:

up from 6pm until five in the morning.
‘I got through them all,’ she said proudly

But all that is chicken feed when you consider the £370 million dividend that
company owner paid himself last year.
And these days that’s Leonid Radvinsky, who bought a majority stake from Tim
Stokely in 2018, two years after he started the business with the help
of a loan from his father.
It was the Covid-era lockdowns that thrust OnlyFans into the stratosphere.
Everyone shut up at home, nothing to do. In 2020, it generated revenues of $2.23billion (£1.8billion).
By 2021, it was up to $4.8billion (£3.8billion).
There was a brief hiatus in October of that year when they tried banning sexually explicit content
but that lasted about ten minutes before they switched back.
There have been plenty of scandals along the way.
A BBC investigation back in 2021 revealed that children were not just accessing the material online by foxing the age verification process but were also selling explicit videos on the website.
Leah, 17, had used a fake driving licence to set up an OnlyFans account where she made £5,000 uploading revealing videos of herself.
There have also been claims of OnlyFans creators using public gyms and spaces to make adult
content.
Recently there has been more concerns that the company is
not doing enough to protect minors.
OnlyFans, however, prefers to portray itself as a force for good, with supporters arguing that
it empowers people by allowing them to sell content – over which
they have full control – directly to consumers.
And many of the Gen Z generation seem to agree. ‘It’s fine.
It’s empowering. It’s taking control,’ they cry, pointing out that the site
has loads of moderators and a tight security system to ensure that all users
are over 18.
And they say, anyway, that OnlyFans isn’t just about sex.
Of course, they’re right. It has long been awash with pneumatic reality
TV stars and the likes of Lottie Moss, Kerry Katona and Katie Price, who are happy
to tease their followers with a few cheeky peeks in skimpy bikinis.
I spend an afternoon browsing the site and, while it is not all ‘spicy’ content
as the company executives like to call it, everything is dripping with sauce and promise.
The big lips, the push-up bras, even the way a
pretty Spanish chef is holding her paella pan. Company executives have been pushing hard to make the platform more mainstream – offering contracts
and financial incentives to encourage musicians, sports stars, cooks, anyone really, to come
on and share a bit of exclusive – or niche – content.
Really, anything that people will pay to look at –
glimpses backstage at concerts. Celebrities in the
bath.

All of which seems to be working well for them, but it can be
rather murkier for others.
Not least because, in less than a decade, OnlyFans has spawned an entire support industry of ‘sugar daddies’
who support performers financially and ‘chatters’ who work for them.
‘Sugar daddies’ tend to be older male businessmen who ‘invest’ in promising creatives.
In what are referred to rather murkily as ‘mutually beneficial deals’,
they invest in branding and marketing and videography to boost traffic.
Chatters are different. For the real stars, the traffic is so high and the interaction with followers so demanding
that if they had to do it all themselves, there’s

Anthony Albanese has tried to claim his relationship with Alan Joyce was a strictly professional
one between a Prime Minister and a corporate titan, as he battles claims
the Qantas boss was his ‘personal travel agent’ for free flights and upgrades.
However that characterization of the relationship was at odds
with that made by Mr Joyce, who said he was ‘good mates’ with
Mr Albanese and had been ‘for years’.
In the wake of the explosive claims that the Prime Minister had
Mr Joyce arrange free tickets and upgrades, Mr Albanese distanced himself from the
Qantas chief.
When asked about about their relationship on Sunday Mr Albanese implied it
was purely in a professional capacity, having been Transport Minister
and shadow transport spokesperson before becoming Prime Minister.
‘He (Joyce) was the CEO of the national airline …
I had the same relationship with him that I have with John Borghetti as the CEO of
Virgin,’ Mr Albanese said.
That assessment was at odds with the many photos showing Mr Albanese and
Mr Joyce apparently greatly enjoying each other’s company.
Mr Albanese and Mr Joyce were pictured in high spirits on the red carpet at
the Qantas 100th Gala Dinner in March last
year.
In photos from the event, Mr Joyce proudly walks the red carpet with one arm around the prime
minister and the other around Mr Albanese’s partner, Jodie Haydon.
Just five months later, in August, a smiling Mr Albanese attended Qantas’s unveiling of it’s special ‘Yes 23′ emblazoned airplanes for the
Voice referendum.

with one arm around the prime minister and the other around his partner,
Jodie Haydon for a special anniversary event last year
Mr Joyce was seen touching Mr Albanese’s arm, with the PM bursting into laughter.
Even when Scott Morrison was PM, Mr Joyce enjoyed an apparently close relationship with Mr
Albanese as the pair stood close together at the launch of the Qantas’ landmark Perth to London flight in March,
2018.
During a Senate hearing in September 2023, Mr Joyce said he had been ‘friends for years’ with Mr Albanese.
Asked about why he gifted Mr Albanese’s son Nathan a
membership to the prestigious and exclusive Chairman’s Lounge Mr Joyce refused to confirm or deny but talked up his relationship with the Prime
Minister.
‘I’ve been good mates with Albo for some time,’ Mr
Joyce said.
However, the then Qantas CEO refused to say whether he lobbied the Prime Minister on the controversial decision to lock competitor Qatar Airways
out of domestic routes.
It has since emerged in a new book about Qantas, The Chairman’s Lounge, by former Australian Financial
Review columnist Joe Aston that Ms Haydon is also a Chairman’s Lounge member.

Reports have emerged in a new book Mr Albanese received 22 upgrades from economy from Qantas and
he would liaise personally with the former airline boss for them.
Aston also alleged Mr Albanese directly contacted Mr Joyce while in his various parliamentary jobs to ask for special
upgrades for himself or his family.
According to unnamed Qantas ‘insiders’ 11 of the 22 flights Mr Albanese received
upgrades for were ‘privately funded’ and included overseas trips to Rome, London, Los
Angeles and Honolulu, with some being for holidays.
Mr Albanese insisted on Tuesday that the London flights was for work purposes and all were
‘declared in the appropriate way’.
Opposition Leader Peter Dutton has leapt on the accusations
describing Mr Albanese as being the ‘best friend’ of Mr Joyce.
Mr Dutton told Sky News on Monday night it was ‘strange’ Mr Albanese
had directly contacted Mr Joyce to request upgrades while holding
a regulatory position in the transport sector.
‘If you’re the Transport Minister and you’re picking
up the phone to one of the most important stakeholders in the portfolio asking for a free upgrade, then again, I think the Prime Minister
would be able to answer those questions more effectively than anyone
else because I’m not aware of anyone else having done it,’ Mr Dutton said.

‘The only discussions that I can recall with Alan Joyce certainly were not discussed
through calls – we discussed the first flight from Australia to Dubai
on the A380,’ he said.
‘I’ve declared everything in accordance with all
of the rules.’
Aston was asked on Monday night by ABC interviewer Sarah Ferguson about how confident he was
that Mr Albanese had made calls personally to Mr Joyce for upgrades.
‘I am very comfortable with my sourcing,’ Aston said.
Asked whether he thought Mr Albanese had been influenced by Mr
Joyce’s lobbying to block UAE airline Qatar domestically Aston said it was ‘implausible’ to think that
the Prime Minister’s office had nothing to do with the
decision.

‘It’s very hard to imagine a decision of any political
sensitivity in the Albanese government that would not go through the Prime Minister’s office,’ Aston replied.
He noted the opening up of the Australian domestic market Qatar had seemingly been sailing through with Transport Minister Catherine King speaking warmly about
the proposal until ‘everything changed’ to stop it dead in tracks.
Ms King repeatedly denied in parliament the decision to block Qatar was due to Qantas lobbying her or any Labor colleagues.
Despite Mr Albanese claiming he declared every upgrade received from Qantas the Australian Financial Review reported on Tuesday that he failed to do for his former
wife Carmel Tebbutt when the two traveled together.

Another awkward paradox of Mr Albanese’s apparent close relationship with Mr Joyce is that the Labor
leader in a trade unionist advocate while Qantas
attempted to break the power of the Transport Workers Union by sacking
1700 staff during Covid.
The sacking has since been ruled illegal by Federal Court in a case brought by the union with Qantas facing possible hundreds of thousands
in compensation payouts.
The friendship however did find one perhaps unlikely defender
in semi-retired 3AW radio star Neil Mitchell.

on X.
‘But does anybody believe he was seriously compromised by having
Alan Joyce as a bestie? Time to rewrite rules governing politicians.’

AJ Bell has called on the Treasury to commit to a
‘pension tax lock’ in the Autumn Budget and claimed to have seen an impact on contributions in recent weeks.
The investment platform told investors on Thursday there had been a ‘noticeable change
in both customer contributions to pensions and tax-free cash withdrawals’
ahead of the 30 October budget.
Boss Michael Summersgill said AJ had made ‘representations’ to Rachel Reeve’s department in a bid to guarantee ‘stability in key pension tax legislation for at least this parliament’.

Under current rules, savers receive pension tax relief at their income tax
rate.
Basic rate taxpayers receive relief at 20 per cent, while higher and additional rate taxpayers receive 40
and 45 per cent respectively.
Rachel Reeves is expected to consider a proposal by
Treasury officials for a flat 30 per cent rate of
pension tax relief.
The Treasury could also look to restrict people’s entitlement to tax-free

In its year-end trading update published on Thursday, AJ Bell announced that investors using its
platform deposited £6.1billion with the group in the last year,
amid a 14 per cent increase in customers.
AJ Bell saw inflows rise 45 per cent from last year, bringing total platform assets under management to £86.5billion, above Investec forecasts.
The group said: ‘Gross and net inflows across the platform were significantly higher than prior year,
driven by the continued investment in AJ Bell’s brand and propositions alongside improved retail investor confidence compared to the prior year.’
Summersgill added: ‘Our strategy is centred on our
dual-channel platform which serves both the advised and [direct to consumer]
platform markets using a single technology platform
and single operating model.
‘This maximises our growth opportunity within the platform market, whilst being
highly efficient to operate.’
Investec analysts said: ‘Given the outperformance delivered by both
Quilter and IntegraFin during the quarter, we believe that
AJ Bell’s in-line performance may be seen as
a slight negative.’
AJ Bell shares fell 1.51 per cent or 7.25p to 473.75p on Thursday,
having risen over 80 per cent in the last year.

Namibians returned to vote on Friday in 36 polling stations reopened two days
after a chaotic election, set to test the ruling party’s 34-year grip on power, was marred by technical problems.
Tensions are mounting in the historically stable and peaceful southern African nation where Wednesday’s election was marked by long delays and labelled a “sham” by
the opposition.
Some people waited 12 hours in line to vote in presidential and legislative polls, billed as
the toughest yet for the South West Africa People’s Organisation (SWAPO) party, in power since Namibia’s 1990 independence from South africa.
Wednesday’s queues were caused by many technical problems, including issues with tablets used to register voters and
shortages of ballot papers.
In some cases, torches used to show up invisible ink had run out of
batteries and mobile voting teams had left areas with voters still in the queues, it said.
Facing criticism from both voters and parties, the electoral commission extended the vote for a second time,
giving Namibians until Saturday evening to vote.
In the capital Windhoek, at the only polling station picked to
reopen, about 60 people showed up on Friday, including Kluivert Muuondjo who arrived at 4:30 am.
The 21-year-old student said he had waited in line until 11:
00 pm on Wednesday but left before being able to vote as
he had exams the next day.

“Everyone will have the chance to vote,” he said. But because Namibians can vote at any given polling station, he was worried “everyone will flock to one place again.”
The disarray led to angry complaints from opposition parties
with some calling for a halt in the electoral process.
Opposition parties were scheduled to meet on Friday and issue a joint statement, according to Christine Aochamus who represents the Independent Patriots for
Change (IPC) party.
Youth unemployment, enduring inequalities and the emergence of a generation born after independence are
challenging support towards SWAPO which has ruled since 1990.
Its candidate, vice-president Netumbo Nandi-Ndaitwah, who could become
the first woman to lead the country if elected, could face an unprecedented
second round in the mineral rich country.
“To open only one place in Khomas (the region of which the capital is part of) is absurd,” said voter Ensley Engermund, who also said he couldn’t vote on Wednesday because of long queues
despite trying four different polling stations.
“Only 1.5 millions voters are registered and we get this chaos?” asked the 49-year-old security agent.
“It was to get people frustrated.”

WASHINGTON, Jan 22 (Reuters) – In a decision expected to test
the Trump administration’s approach to tobacco regulation, U.S.
health advisers will vote this week on whether to
allow Philip Morris International Inc to sell its novel iQOS tobacco device and claim it is less harmful than cigarettes.
The sleekly packaged little tube would not look out of place in an Apple store.
It is designed to heat tobacco but not burn it. Most of the harmful chemicals in tobacco are released when tobacco is burned.
The advisers to the Food and Drug Administration will discuss
the product on Wednesday and Thursday and recommend whether it should be cleared.
The FDA is not obliged to follow the recommendations of its
outside advisers but typically does.
If cleared, iQOS would become the first product to carry a
modified-risk claim and could help advance the FDA’s proposed
new approach to reducing the dangers of smoking.
For decades, U.S. health agencies have worked to help
Americans quit cigarettes to avoid the risks of lung
cancer and other disease. National smoking rates have declined to near historic
lows of around 15 percent.
But in July, newly appointed FDA Commissioner Scott Gottlieb proposed reducing nicotine levels in cigarettes to “non-addictive” levels while increasing development of lower-risk alternatives.
The policy assumes that some percentage of the population will be unable or unwilling to give up nicotine.
To make the new strategy succeed, the agency needs a stable of vetted,
reduced-risk alternatives to cigarettes on the market.
Philip Morris is one of the few companies that can finance such a long and expensive development
process. It has spent close to $3 billion on reduced-risk products.
“If this application fails, it will be clear that this is an expensive, wasteful, regulatory dead end,” said Clive Bates,
a tobacco expert who runs the consulting firm Counterfactual and advocates for alternative nicotine products.
Bates and others argue that if Philip Morris cannot win FDA clearance for a modified-risk product, no
one will be able to.
Other companies have submitted modified-risk products for FDA review.
22nd Century Group Inc, which genetically engineers tobacco plants
to have lower nicotine levels, seeks clearance for its
“Brand A” very low nicotine cigarettes. R.J. Reynolds
Tobacco Co, owned by British American Tobacco Plc , is seeking clearance for
six snus products – a moist smokeless tobacco pouch placed under the lip – under the Camel brand.

THE CLAIM
IQOS is used by nearly 4 million people in 30 markets outside the United States.
It consists of a small pen-like holder containing a heated tobacco stick, and a charger.
It looks similar to an e-cigarette, but uses real tobacco rather than nicotine-laced liquid.
Philip Morris says that iQOS contains up to 95 percent fewer harmful or
potentially harmful chemicals than the cigarette smoke produced from burning
tobacco. If approved, the product would be marketed by U.S.
partner Altria Group Inc.
The hurdles for success are high.
To sell a new tobacco product, a company must demonstrate that it significantly reduces the risk of disease and does not
encourage more smoking or delay quitting.
To date, the FDA has determined that only eight products meet that standard, all of
them snus smokeless tobacco pouches made by Swedish Match AB.
The agency has granted no company the right to specifically
claim that their product is less risky than cigarettes.
Tobacco control activists say companies like Philip Morris cannot be trusted to make
reduced-risk claims. They point to the industry’s previous
promotion of “light” and “low-tar” cigarettes as safer alternatives despite evidence showing they were not.
Others argue that things have changed. Since 2009, the tobacco industry has had to answer to the FDA under federal
law. New technology, including e-cigarettes and heat-not-burn products, may
help smokers quit or shift those who cannot quit onto a less harmful
substitute, they say.
“Many of my friends in the tobacco control movement are still fighting the tobacco wars of the 1980s,”
said Scott Ballin, an independent health policy consultant
and long-time anti-tobacco activist. “We are beyond that now.”
The FDA’s Gottlieb favors an approach to treating addiction that makes available less
harmful versions of addictive substances, including nicotine and opioids.
These products, he argues, can help minimize damage to those unable to quit.
Mitch Zeller, head of the FDA’s tobacco division, refers frequently to
a “continuum of risk” for nicotine products, with nicotine
gums and lozenges on one end and cigarettes on the other.
The FDA would like to shift smokers unable to quit nicotine from high-risk to low-risk products.
“What we have developed is an offering on the continuum of risk,” said Ruth Dempsey, Philip Morris’ director
of scientific engagement. “We believe it is better than cigarettes.”

Oct 20 (Reuters) – Marlboro maker Philip Morris International
Inc on Thursday raised its buyout bid for Swedish Match
AB in a last-ditch effort to get backing for its $16 billion offer that has been met with shareholder opposition.
Although Philip Morris raised its bid by more than 9% to 116 Swedish crowns per share
and called its “best and final price”, some Swedish Match shareholders seem to be holding out for more.
Their concern is that the total value of the new offer is little changed from
the original bid due to the appreciation in the U.S. currency against the Swedish krona.
“Let’s just say it’s silly on an almost biblical scale not to neither compensate for the USD/SEK appreciation since the launch of the bid, nor the ongoing inflation,”
said Pontus Dackmo, chief executive of Protean Funds who has 500,
000 shares in Swedish Match.
He, however, declined to comment on whether the fund
would tender its shares in light of the increased offer.
In May, Philip Morris made an all-cash offer of 106 crowns per
share for Stockholm-based Swedish Match. Since then, the company has been under pressure to increase the offer as hedge funds, including Elliott Management Corp, have bolstered their stakes in Swedish Match in anticipation of a
sweetened bid.
Bloomberg reported in July that Elliott, which raised its stake in Swedish Match to 7.25% from 5.5%
in September, was planning to oppose the deal as it was not in favor of the
offer terms, when the bid was first revealed.
A source told Reuters last month that Elliott was also considering taking a seat on the board of
the Stockholm-based maker of Zyn nicotine pouches.
Swedish Match and Elliott declined to comment on Philip Morris’ revised offer.
John Hempton, co-founder of Sydney-based Bronte Capital that owns 1% of Swedish Match, said he was still not intending to accept the bid, despite the increased offer price.
“It is wonderful news. Philip Morris has announced that they are not waiving the 90 percent acceptance condition. The deal will fail and Swedish Match will remain an independent company,” Hempton said.
By Swedish law, 90% of Swedish Match shareholders need to approve the offer before
Nov. 4. Philip Morris said on Thursday that it still stood firmly on the 90% acceptance rate.
“We do not think this will be enough,” Jefferies analyst Owen Bennett said,
adding that he expects Philip Morris to lower the 90% acceptance condition in the next few weeks.
The revised bid also comes as Philip Morris bought rights
to sell its IQOS heated tobacco products in the United States
from Altria Group Inc for $2.7 billion.
The company, which was spun off from Altria in 2008, has said it wanted smoke-free products to account for
more than half of its sales by 2025.
Shares of Swedish Match rose about 2%, but were still nearly 4 crowns short of the
offer price, while Philip Morris’ stock was down marginally.
