‘It’s so hard to talk about but I think we feel like we achieved what we set
out to do,’ Joaquin, 49, simply stated.
Someone on X, formerly Twitter, posted the moment online last week and
it went viral, gaining more then 437,000 views in a matter
of days – and many users took their initial silence as proof that they ‘didn’t like’ the film.
The internet has been flooded with negative posts about the flick ever
since it premiered, with one user branding it as a ‘bore’ and another
claiming it had ‘no plot.’
Many social media users have also slammed the movie’s final scene, which saw main character Arthur
Fleck (portrayed by Joaquin) brutally stabbed to death
by a fellow inmate.
This meant that the man that audiences had been watching
over the course of the two movies was never the Joker at all, but in fact, the infamous villain from the Batman series was really just the random inmate who killed Arthur in the last moments of the film.
The shocking twist left numerous viewers unsatisfied, and they took to social media to share their frustration.

The Todd Phillips-directed musical serves as
a follow-up to the 2019 box office hit, which was simply titled Joker.
The first film grossed over $1 billion and at the time was the
highest-grossing R-rated film of all time. It received 11 Oscar
nominations – two of which it won.
The sequel, however, has already been much less successful.
It had a lackluster $40 million debut at the box office in its first weekend,
and has a low rating of 33 percent and 31 percent on Rotten Tomatoes.
‘Undoing much of the goodwill from its predecessor, the sequel convolutes what could have been a unique character study into a bloated encore that
goes out with a whimper,’ reads one review.
Another critic wrote, ‘This movie is a disjointed mess and a waste of time.
It’s just tired, not particularly interesting, but it does look good from a production design standpoint.’

Namibians returned to vote on Friday in 36 polling stations reopened two days after a chaotic election,
set to test the ruling party’s 34-year grip on power, was marred by technical problems.
Tensions are mounting in the historically stable and peaceful southern African nation where Wednesday’s election was marked
by long delays and labelled a “sham” by the opposition.
Some people waited 12 hours in line to vote in presidential and legislative polls,
billed as the toughest yet for the South West Africa People’s Organisation (SWAPO) party,
in power since Namibia’s 1990 independence from South africa.
Wednesday’s queues were caused by many technical problems,
including issues with tablets used to register voters and shortages of ballot papers.
In some cases, torches used to show up invisible ink had run out of batteries and mobile voting teams had left areas with voters still in the queues,
it said.
Facing criticism from both voters and parties, the electoral commission extended the vote for a second time, giving
Namibians until Saturday evening to vote.
In the capital Windhoek, at the only polling station picked to reopen, about
60 people showed up on Friday, including Kluivert Muuondjo who arrived at 4:30
am.
The 21-year-old student said he had waited in line until 11:00 pm
on Wednesday but left before being able to vote as he had exams the next day.

“Everyone will have the chance to vote,” he said.
But because Namibians can vote at any given polling
station, he was worried “everyone will flock to one place again.”
The disarray led to angry complaints from opposition parties with some calling for a halt in the
electoral process.
Opposition parties were scheduled to meet on Friday and issue a joint statement, according to Christine Aochamus who
represents the Independent Patriots for Change (IPC) party.
Youth unemployment, enduring inequalities and
the emergence of a generation born after independence are challenging support
towards SWAPO which has ruled since 1990.
Its candidate, vice-president Netumbo Nandi-Ndaitwah, who could
become the first woman to lead the country if elected, could face an unprecedented second round in the mineral rich country.
“To open only one place in Khomas (the region of which the capital is part of) is absurd,” said voter Ensley Engermund, who also said he couldn’t vote on Wednesday because of long queues despite trying four different polling
stations.
“Only 1.5 millions voters are registered and we get this chaos?” asked the 49-year-old security agent.
“It was to get people frustrated.”

Joker: Folie À Deux is heading to streaming,
just weeks after its theatrical release.
The movie, starring Joaquin Phoenix and Lady Gaga, will be
available to rent from home starting October 29, in an effort to recoup some of Warner Bros.
investment into the film, as per Variety.
The musical, which bombed at the box office, is ‘poised to lose at least $150 million to $200 million in its theatrical run’ according to the
publication.
The movie studio spent about $200 million to produce the
film and about $100 million on marketing and distribution, according to the report.
It would need to gross about $450 million at the box office to
break even — when factoring in the cut taken by theaters — though Warner Bros.
sources claim the number is $375 million.

A Warner Bros. spokesperson responded to the report,
saying ‘Any estimates suggested by anonymous “insiders” or “rival executives”
are grossly wrong and continues a trend where rumor is reported as fact.’
‘The film continues to play in theatrical release, included with this week’s
opening in China, and will continue to earn revenue throughout its home viewing and ancillary run.’
So far, the musical about Batman’s nemesis has grossed $51.5 million domestically and $165 million globally after two weeks of release.
In comparison, the first Joker grossed $96.2 million domestically and $248.4 million globally after three days of release.

Todd Phillips’ process telling Variety he ‘wanted nothing to do with DC’ during the making of the film,
with DC bosses James Gunn and Peter Safran notably absent from the film’s LA premiere afterparty
last month.
A source said: ‘If the first movie was about some down-on-his-luck, mentally ill guy in a downtrodden city, it makes maybe $150 [million] worldwide.
Not a billion. People showed up because that guy
was Joker.’
In an apparent snub by Phillips, the opening sequence of the film does not include a DC Studios logo.
A Warner spokesman added that a DC logo appears at the end of the Joker sequel, while
Phillips declined to comment to the publication.
Several frictions are said to have developed between Phillips,
DC and Warner- with claims that Michael DeLuca, Chairperson of Warner Bros.
Entertainment, and CEO Pamela Abdy seemed ‘unwilling’ to say no to Phillips due to his huge past successes.
It is claimed Phillips would ‘only’ speak with DeLuca and Abdy rather than Gunn and Safran – who took control of DC two
months before production began on Joker 2 in December
2022.
Gunn and Safran did attend the first director’s cut screening for the studio but Phillips fueled rift speculation when he told a reporter:
‘With all due respect to them, this is kind of a
Warner Bros. movie.’
Warner Bros. Discovery CEO David Zaslav also met with Phillips shortly after WarnerMedia and Discovery merged in April 2022 and
was ‘open to filming in Los Angeles if the director would
make the sequel at a lower price point.’
The studio wanted to film in London which would have cost around
20 per cent less.
A source directly involved with the film recently shared: ‘The one
thing about genre stuff: If you don’t listen and pay attention to what the fan expectations
are, you’re going to fail'; director Todd Phillips seen with Gaga and Phoenix at the LA premiere September 30
However, Phillips insisted on filming in LA with the budget
remaining static.
A Warner spokesman told the publication the studio ‘supported the decision to film in Los
Angeles’.
A source directly involved with the film said: ‘No one
could get through to Todd. And the one thing about genre stuff: If you don’t listen and
pay attention to what the fan expectations are, you’re going to fail.
Insiders also claim studio bosses did not want to premiere the film
at the Venice Film Festival, but Phillips pushed back – with a Warner spokesman saying the studio ‘fully supported the decision to bring the film to Venice.
Along with Gaga and Phoenix, other stars that had appeared in the sequel include Brendan Gleeson, Catherine Keener, Zazie Beatz and Steve Coogan.

In Arizona, their ideological duel has reached a white-hot peak, with both topics the subject of fiercely debated ballot referendums.
And in this key southwestern state — where the billionaire Trump lost to President Joe Biden in 2020 by
a tiny margin of about 10,500 votes — every ballot truly will count.
In the mid-sized city of Tucson, hundreds of volunteers in orange
T-shirts were going door-to-door to try to persuade voters
to back a ballot measure to inscribe abortion rights in the state constitution — and,
while they’re at it, to vote for Vice President Harris.
To Grace Ireland, a 26-year-old activist, the abortion restrictions imposed by several Republican-controlled states amount to “a public health crisis that Donald Trump and the Republicans have created.”
She added, “Democrats and Kamala Harris are trying to push us forward and protect women’s health care and protect our democracy and protect all people.”

Since 2022, when the US Supreme Court ended the constitutional protection of federal abortion rights, Ireland, a registered nurse,
has worked in several states where abortion is banned or severely limited.
Those restrictions have had sometimes disastrous consequences

“It’s important to reiterate that Donald Trump and these abortion bans are one and the same,” Ireland said.
But in Tucson there is little unanimity among young voters.
“I do think that abortion is murder,” said Pedro Lopez, a 20-year-old college student.
“There are cases of incest or rape” that merit exceptions, he conceded, “but that’s very small.”
He also worries about the flow of undocumented migrants that have entered the country from
Mexico during the Biden-Harris administration.
“People that are entering the United States illegally… should be sent back to where they came from,” he said.
“My grandparents migrated from Mexico to the United States, and they did it the right way.”
So he plans not only to vote for Trump, but to back
the proposal to let local law enforcement detain,
arrest and prosecute anyone suspected of having
entered the country illegally — powers normally reserved to the border police who work for the federal government.
“I know people that work for the Border Patrol, and they’re really upset because this current administration has really tied their hands up. They’re not really able to do anything,” Lopez said.

The major political parties see the competing referendums as offering
an opportunity to mobilize more people to vote — on ballot questions at
the very heart of the two presidential campaigns.

But the referendums may not have the clear impact
on the race for the White House that activists hope.
Polls show Trump and Harris running neck-and-neck in Arizona, with the Republican holding a very narrow lead.
Both ballot questions, meantime, have drawn strong support and both appear likely to pass.
So the abortion issue may not be “helping Democrats in the way that they would hope,” said
Jenny Brian, a professor of bioethics at Arizona State University.
Many Republican women will vote both to protect abortion rights and to bring Trump back to the White House, Brian said.
Though abortion is sometimes framed as a Democrat vs.
Republican issue, the Republican Party includes “a broad spectrum of views on the topic,” an issue that also raises conservatives’ concerns about “government interference,” she added.
The same dynamic applies to immigration, with the
tougher language on the Arizona ballot question finding support not just among Trump Republicans but also “moderates and even many Democrats,” said John Kavanagh, a Republican and an Arizona state senator.
The 74-year-old Kavanagh is unimpressed by Harris’s recent toughening on migration, specifically her promise
to maintain the partial closing of the border Biden ordered in recent months.

Around 104,000 people paid for tickets to watch the Paris 2024 Opening Ceremony live, with the best seats costing more than £2500.
Despite heavy rain, many sat through multiple acts, including a pre-recorded one by Lady Gaga,
which was shown on multiple screens along the river, as well as around the world.
But Ms Dion’s performance was meant to be a live one,
and it has just been released as such on various streaming platforms.
Ms Dion announced on Instagram on Thursday that the ‘live’
recording was available on sites such as YouTube and
Spotify.

‘I think what happened, after the first Joker, there was a lot
of talk like, ‘Oh, this was loved by incels. This was loved by the wrong kinds of
people. This sent the wrong kind of message. Male rage! Nihilism!

seen.’
‘We were talking about it at lunch, and we’d go, ‘What is the plot?
Is there a plot? I don’t know, I think he falls in love with her in the prison?’ It’s not even hate-watchable.
That’s how terrible it is.’
Despite the negative reviews a number of fans of the sequel took to social media after its release last month to defend the sequel to Todd Phillips’ 2019 motion picture.
The film debuted to a paltry $40 million at the domestic box office, good enough for the weekend’s top
spot, but less than projections, and half that of its predecessor.
Amid the early returns, a number of fans took
up for the movie and its cinematic depth, in breaking away
from the cookie cutter nature of sequels to introduce a musical element not
present in the first film, with Lady Gaga joining the franchise.
‘Joker 2 was amazing,’ one user said, adding that it was ‘100% as divisive as
people are making it out to be. I love that the film didn’t try to be
a traditional sequel, and fully committed to the storytelling they presented.
It never deviated to be a film full of Easter eggs or any
other crowd pleasing aspects.’
Another user said, ‘I kinda loved Joker 2. I loved
how it was structured as a meta-exploration of the first film’s fandom and the musical
elements were a lot of fun.’

Lady Gaga is set to release her seventh studio album in February.
Despite lead single Disease stalling on the Hot 100 at No.
27, the 38-year-old is forging ahead with her next album,
which she described as both ‘fun’ and ‘darker.’
Speaking to Vogue magazine about the project, Gaga
said that she’s been focused on the production side of her new songs.
‘I love producing — I always have — and something that was really
important to me making my seventh studio album was blending live
instrumentation with programming,’ she explained.
‘The album is chaotic from a genre perspective — it is genre-bending, and I think in that way is
a deeply personal look into my mind as a producer and the way I think about music.’
She also said that the album has a ‘darker pop’ sound that’s

Do Greens and crossbenchers who claim that transparency and integrity is at the heart of
their reason for entering Parliament in the first place hear themselves?
In the past few days they have mounted self-serving arguments against proposed
electoral reforms that the major parties look set to come together to support.
The reforms include caps for how much money wealthy individuals can donate, caps on the amount candidates can spend in individual electorates to prevent
the equivalent of an arms race, and a $90million limit on what
any party can spend at an election – actually less than the major parties currently spend.
The proposed new laws also include lower disclosure thresholds for
donations, thus increasing the transparency of who makes political donations
in the first place.
So the wealthy wont be able to hide behind anonymity while using their cash to influence election outcomes
– and the extent to which they can use their
wealth at all will be limited.
The bill will further improve transparency by also increasing the speed and frequency
that disclosures of donations need to be made.
At present we have the absurd situation in which donations get made
– but you only find out the details of who
has given what to whom many months later, well
after elections are won and lost.
In other words, what is broadly being proposed will result in much greater transparency and far less big money being injected into campaigning by
the wealthy.
Teal Kylea Tink claimed the major parties were ‘running scared’ with the policy and warned the
reform would ‘not stop the rot’

said: ‘What seems to be happening is a major-party stitch-up’
Anyone donating more than $1,000 to a political party, as opposed to $16,000 under the current rules, will need to disclose
having done so. And how much they can donate will be capped.
Yet the Greens and Teals have quickly condemned the
proposed new laws, labeling them a ‘stitch-up’, ‘outrageous’ and ‘a rort, not a reform’.
They have lost their collective minds after finding out that Labor’s proposal
just might secure the support of the opposition.
I had to double check who was criticising what exactly before even starting to write this column.
Because I had assumed – incorrectly – that these important transparency measures stamping out the influence of
the wealthy must have been proposed by the virtue-signalling Greens or the corruption-fighting Teals,
in a united crossbench effort to drag the major parties
closer to accountability.
More fool me.
The bill, designed to clean up a rotten system, is being put forward by Labor and is opposed by a growing cabal of crossbenchers.
It makes you wonder what they have to hide. Put simply, the Greens and Teals doth protest too much on this issue.
Labor is thought to be trying to muscle out major political donors
such as Clive Palmer
Another potential target of the laws is businessman and Teal funder Simon Holmes à Court
The Greens have taken massive donations in the past, contrary to their irregular calls to tighten donations

The major parties have long complained about the influence the likes of
Simon Holmes à Court wields behind the scenes amongst the Teals.
And we know the Greens have taken massive donations from
the wealthy in the past, contrary to their irregular calls to tighten donations rules.
Now that tangible change has been proposed, these bastions
of virtue are running a mile from reforms that will curtail
dark art of political donations.
The Labor government isn’t even seeking for these transparency rules to take effect immediately, by the way.
It won’t be some sort of quick-paced power
play before the next election designed to catch the
crossbench out.
They are aiming for implementation by 2026, giving everyone enough
time to absorb and understand the changes before preparing for them.
Don’t get me wrong, no deal has yet been done between Labor and the Coalition. I
imagine the opposition want to go over the laws with a fine tooth comb.
As they should – because it certainly isn’t beyond Labor to include hidden one-party advantages in the proposed design which would create loopholes only the
unions are capable of taking advantage of, therefore disadvantaging
the Coalition electorally in the years to come.
But short of such baked-in trickiness scuttling a deal to
get these proposed laws implemented, the crossbench should offer their support, not cynical opposition, to
what is being advocated for.
They might even be able to offer something worthwhile that could be incorporated in the package.
To not do so exposes their utter hypocrisy and blowhard false commentary about being in politics to ‘clean things up’.

Smith pleaded not guilty and was released on a $10 million bond put
up by Jeffries and his family, said a statement from the US attorney’s office for the eastern district of New York.
An AFP photographer saw Smith leave the courthouse with what appeared to be a large electronic surveillance bracelet attached to his ankle.

are second favourite, followed by the 30 Denier Body Sensor Tights (£8 for a three-pack).
The fourth most popular pair is the 60 Denier Magicwear Opaque Tights (£14 for a two-pack), and the top five is rounded out by
the 100 Denier Magicwear Opaque Tights (£14 for a two-pack).
These are the number one selling tights at Marks &
Spencer
M&S believes the decision between opaque and sheer tights should be based on the
formality of our outfit. ‘Opaque black tights will go with basically everything.
Often said to clash with black; blue or brown hues are also an option.’
‘Sheer tights are great for more formal occasions and warmer temperatures, as they
provide a lighter and more breathable option,’ the high street giant added.
‘You can achieve that elegant, barely-there look with a
little extra coverage.’
Similarly, intricate patterns, logos and glitter are
best suited for evening looks, says M&S. ‘For a daytime or office
look, stick with polka dots or diamond patterned tights, or if you’re looking for some added cosiness, try cable-knit tights for some
subtle texture.’

Earlier this year, the Pittsburgh native debuted the Seven Faces of Jane, an anthology comprised of eight short films all starring the actress as the main character.
The anthology has eight different directors, including Jacobs along with Ken Jeong, Gia Coppola, Ryan Heffington, Alexandra Cassavetes, Boma Iluma, Julian Acosta and Alex Takacs.
The cast includes the likes of Emanuela Postacchini, Anthony
Skordi, Leticia LaBelle, Benjamin Hjelm, Chido Nwokocha, Sybil Azur,
Daniela Hernandez, Joel McHale, Caroline Ducrocq,
Breeda Wool, Soledad St. Hilaire, Joni Reiss and Paris Nicole.
The film premiered at the Bentonville Film Festival last summer and select
theaters and VOD in January.

PARIS (AP) – Not even a tense tête-à-tête in the gold medal game could spoil the vibe at Paris´
biggest beach party.
Canada´s Brandie Wilkerson and Brazil´s Ana Patrícia got into a finger-pointing shouting match across the
net in the tiebreaking third set of the beach volleyball
final of the Paris Olympics on Friday night. The referee tried to keep the peace, but it was the Eiffel Tower Stadium
DJ who cooled tempers on the sand by playing John Lennon´s “Imagine”
over the PA system.
The players laughed and clapped. The crowd applauded and sang along.
Wilkerson was shown a yellow card.
The top-ranked Brazilians left with the gold medal.
“We`re competitors and we are fighting for the same thing: There´s only one gold medal,” Wilkerson said during a post-match news conference in which
the two laughed and jokingly put up their fists as if they were
going to brawl it out.

“Immediately after the game, it´s all love and respect,” she said.
“We bring out the best in each other, and I´m honored to play against this team.”
Ana Patrícia and Duda rallied from an 11-5
deficit to take the first-to-21, win-by-two first
set 26-24, and Canada won the second 21-12. Brazil opened up a 12-7 lead
in the first-to-15 tiebreaker when, after a joust
at the net, Wilkerson and Ana Patrícia began pointing fingers at each other.
The second referee, the one at sand level, moved
out to separate the two players, but Wilkerson continued to argue and
picked up a yellow card. As the Brazilians got into position to serve for the next
point, the DJ began playing “Imagine,” the late Beatle’s song calling for
unity and peace.
The message resonated with the players.
“What a beautiful opportunity we have to play the finals under the Eiffel Tower against the best in the world,” Wilkerson said.
“Like, that, in of itself, is a win.”
Wilkerson told reporters afterward that it was all a misunderstanding: She
was responding to her family, cheering in the crowd behind the Brazilians,
and Ana Patrícia thought Wilkerson was taunting her.
“We´re pretty amped up, partners are coming in, refs are coming in. So it was a bit of a mess,” Wilkerson said.
“But after the game, and even right when they came to shake our hands, still on the court, there was an immediate hug and just kind of like, `Hey, it´s all good.´”
When play resumed, it took Brazil only five more points to finish off Wilkerson and Melissa Humana-Paredes,
kicking off a party the sport’s spiritual home hadn’t seen since hosting the 2016 Rio de Janeiro Games at Copacabana.
In Tokyo, the country was shut out at the Summer Games for the first
time since beach volleyball was added to the program in 1996.
Three years later, Brazil not only returned to the podium but climbed to its
top step.
With the Eiffel Tower’s strobes sparking in the background and yellow- and green-wearing fans singing
and waving Brazilian flags, the country was awarded its first women’s gold since
Atlanta. (The United States, which had won four of the last five, was shut out in both the men’s and women’s tournaments in Paris.)
After the medal ceremony, the Canadians and Brazilians – along with the bronze-winning Swiss – posed for selfies
together. Wilkerson and Ana Patrícia spoke to each other and hugged;
there may have even been an air kiss.
“It was a game thing,” Ana Patrícia said. “Everybody wants to win. But it happens. It´s everybody trying to win, but now everything is OK.”
Wilkerson and Humana-Paredes will return to Canada
with the country’s first beach volleyball
medal since the men won bronze at the 1996 Atlanta
Games. That team was coached by Humana-Paredes’ father.
Switzerland beat Australia in straight sets in the third-place game earlier Friday night
to earn the bronze medal.
Nina Brunner and Tanja Huerberli beat Tokyo silver medalists Taliqua
Clancy and Mariafe Artacho del Solar 21-17, 21-15 in 39 minutes.
It was the second Summer Games in a row that a Swiss team took the
bronze medal, coming three years after Joana Heidrich and
Anouk Vergé-Dépré placed third in Tokyo.
On the men’s side, Sweden was set to face Germany for gold on Saturday night, with Norway and Qatar playing for the bronze.

LONDON, Sept 28 (Reuters) – Philip Morris International (PMI) on Thursday signalled a slower than anticipated
U.S. roll out of its IQOS heated tobacco device, a choice analysts said was positive
for its competitors in the short term.
The New York-listed Marlboro maker also said it aims for more than two thirds
of its net revenues to come from “smoke-free” products by 2030, up from 50% in 2025, as it tries to transform its image from a cigarette purveyor to a driver of
the shift to healthier alternatives.
Investors have been closely watching IQOS’ entry into the U.S., the world’s largest market for
nicotine products, and had been expecting it from May 2024 next year.
Reuters reported on Wednesday that PMI is hiring lobbyists across a host of key U.S.
states ahead of the launch.
Chief Executive Jacek Olczak said IQOS would launch in four cities in two unnamed U.S.
states from 2024, but a national launch would only come after PMI receives approval to sell the
latest version, known as IQOS ILUMA.
The company was planning to apply for approval in October and expected it
from 2025, he continued.
“We need to warm up the tyres,” he said of the initial launch, which would help PMI fine tune its approach.
A national roll-out of ILUMA would follow but in phases, he continued, adding launching in 10 states in the first year would make sense.
Meaningful traction for PMI’s heated tobacco products
in the U.S. “now looks delayed until ILUMA,” Owen Bennett, equity analyst
at Jefferies, said in a note, adding this was a positive for PMI’s rivals.
Olczak also signalled that PMI’s push into non-nicotine products
was no longer a priority. It recently scrapped an ambition for $1
billion in net revenues to come from sales of such products by 2025.
Instead, PMI will focus its resources on IQOS and nicotine pouch brand ZYN, Olczak said, adding
it had been too optimistic around acceptance of big tobacco companies operating outside of nicotine.
PMI also announced updated medium-term targets including for revenue and earnings per share, and ambitious volume targets for IQOS and ZYN.
ZYN and other oral nicotine products in the U.S.
would help drive an expected $2 billion in revenues there in 2024, even before IQOS ILUMA, executives said.
